Canowindra Railway Park

Canowindra Railway Park Clean up, preserve buildings & equipment and make area suitable for public use the large Rail Precinct adjacent to the Canowindra Age Of Fishes Museum.

Canowindra is a beautiful historic village on the banks of the Belubula River in Central NSW approximately 60km south of the city of Orange. The village was built on gold, both the traditional yellow stuff anf green gold, lucerne. the rich river flats and abundant water produces large volumes of high quality lucerne. Moving the valuable produce required an extensive rail precinct with station, she

ds and all the other associated infrastructure. The area is adjacent to the village main street and while much of the original buildings and equipment is well preserved it is disused and deteriorating rapidly. It is not the intention of this group to resurrect the rail nor build a rail museum. We aim to open up the area for public use and build a public park on the site retaining as much of the historic rail infrastructure as possible in a sympathetic way that encourages wide appeal and popular public use. We need your support in ant way possible..

We are eagerly awaiting the proposed master plan for the precinct redevelopment.
It is expected within the week and will be discussed at a public meeting as soon as possible.

In the mean time the area has been tidied up and plans are underway to remove any remaining asbestos.

The good news is it was decided at today's meeting to proceed and to investigate the redevelopment of the rail precinct into a usable community park.
Locals present at today's meeting agreed there is a community benefit in creating a park and options were floated to increase public involvement.
Initially we need letters of support from local clubs, organizations, businesses and individuals.
The most likely plan will be to initially do the most basic and easiest redevelopment that ensures the area is cleaned up and practical to maintain. Follow up with more intense and complicated works such as renovating buildings, installing gardens and interpretive signage.
A meeting is planned for early June with council staff, a heritage consultant and a John Holland representative with the aim of setting guidelines, responsibilities and funding avenues.

Canowindra's disused rail precinct. The old grain storage shed, station buildings and goods shed are all suitable to community use and the turntable brings a significant historic feature to the park.

Canowindra boasts the fantastic well preserved but disused rail precinct pictured above. It is adjacent to the village CBD and backs onto The Age Of Fishes and Historic Museums.
This area can be reinvented into a beautiful and function public area and park. The long shed can be renovated for community use and the buildings turned into usable spaces.
Are you interested in assisting us bring this fantastic resource back to life and make it the public resource for our Village. Please like the page and comment if you are interested in assisting at any level.

We have the support of the John Holland Group who are the managers of the area on behalf the NSW railways and Cabonne Council have also shown support in redeveloping the area.
