Candelo Arts Society and the Bokeh team are hosting a community lantern-making workshop with visual artist Tracey Johnson on Monday June 1st in lead up and preparation for BOKEH.

Tracey creates immersive light and lantern installations that bring warmth, colour, and connection to outdoor events and community spaces. Based in Tathra, she travels across Australia delivering workshops and large-scale illuminated artworks that encourage creativity, participation, and storytelling.

For BOKEH, Tracey will create a Wishing Tree installation featuring illuminated bamboo and paper lanterns suspended in a tree. Festival attendees will be invited to add written wishes and messages to coloured paper tags attached to the lanterns, allowing the artwork to grow and evolve throughout the evening.

To create the lanterns, Tracey will lead a hands-on 2.5-hour community workshop. Participants will learn traditional lantern-making techniques while contributing directly to the final BOKEH installation. Lanterns can be collected and taken home after the event.

Workshop Details
Monday 1st June 2026
9:30am – 12:00pm
All materials and LED lights included
Full workshop facilitation by Tracey Johnson
No cost for the participants

This workshop offers a beautiful opportunity for creativity, community participation, and connection, culminating in a collaborative illuminated artwork for BOKEH 2026 to light up the darkness.

Please email [email protected] to sign up for the workshop. Places are limited so get it quick.

Call for Artists. We are now inviting Expressions of Interest (EOI) from artists, makers and creative practitioners to be part of Bokeh, a community arts event transforming the Candelo park and hall into a temporary immersive landscape of light, sound and installation.

Bokeh is a celebration of place and imagination, where the artworks interact with nature, pathways, and the public as they move through the spaces. We welcome proposals across a wide range of mediums including (but not limited to) light-based works, installations, sculpture, sound art, projection, interactive or participatory pieces and site-responsive work.

About the event:
Bokeh exhibition will take place in the Candelo park and hall at night June 13th, 6pm-8pm. The event is designed to be atmospheric, accessible, and family-friendly, encouraging slow wandering and moments of wonder to light up the darkest month. Last event in 2024 we had about 350 visitors to the exhibition.

We are particularly interested in works that respond to the landscape/building, explore light and shadow and create sensory or immersive experiences.

All installations need to be self sufficient in terms of projectors, speakers, screens, lights and the set up of your exhibit. We will provide electrical power. As a non-for-profit event run by volunteers, all ticket sale income will be shared equally among artists.

There are indoor and outdoor sites. If you have a specific area where your artwork needs to go, please let us know. But understand that you may not get your first preference, we will work together to create the next best location for you.

EOI closing date: 30 April, artists notified by 15 May

To apply, please complete the EOI form in the link

“These are whip-smart, bone-achingly lovely, socially committed songs presented with a bold, elegant directness evoking the very best of the folk music tradition. Last night's performance in Notional Space was a thing of rare beauty.” — Mark Jacobs, presenter, Notional Space

We at CAS are dedicated Scott Cook fans and last time he rolled through these parts with Pamela Mae it was a rare and special evening indeed!

So next week we are so very excited to be hosting their return as it promises to be a magical evening of story, song, laughter and also with plenty of the feels we all need and love.

Part communion for our collective spirits, part celebration of the heart and always a joy to experience, let’s show Scott and Pamela that live music is also an intrinsic part of our valley’s way of building strong collective connections and new friendships.

The show will be supported by Candelo’s own The Wild Martinis, this young band is absolutely a delight to behold.

It’s going to be one very tasty evening, grab yourselves some tickets and see you next week (Thursday Jan 15th)!

Born in West Virginia and raised on the Canadian prairies, Scott Cook quit a job teaching kindergarten in Taiwan in 2007 to embark on the life of a full-time troubadour. Since then he's toured steadily across Canada, the US, Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere, living out of backpacks and campervans, averaging over a hundred shows and a dozen summer festivals a year, and distilling his experiences into empathetic, keenly observant verse.

Scott has completed ten tours of Australia already, including talked-about performances at Woodford, Port Fairy, Cobargo, Candelo, Cygnet, Healesville, Mullumbimby, Newstead, Kangaroo Valley, Dorrigo, Maldon, Illawarra, the National, and Yackandandah folk festivals, and recorded his seventh album Tangle of Souls in Trentham, Victoria with his intercontinental stringband Scott Cook and the She'll Be Rights.

The collection comes packaged in a cloth-bound, 240-page hardcover book of road stories and ruminations with gum leaf prints by Healesville artist Cecilia Sharpley. The album spent two weeks at #1 back home on Alberta's province-wide community radio network CKUA, and earned Scott his third Canadian Folk Music Award nomination, for English Songwriter of the Year. Its second single "Say Can You See" was the second most-played song of 2020 on Folk Alliance International's folk radio charts, and took top honours for the folk category in both the 2020 UK Songwriting Competition and the 2020 Great American Song Contest.

He’s been back on the road full-time since January of 2022, living in a campervan named Roadetta with his sweetheart Pamela Mae on upright bass and vocals, and recording his eighth album Troubadourly Yours. In 2026 he and Pamela Mae are visiting a few choice festivals and towns around Australia in their HiAce Hector before embarking on a full tour of New Zealand. Fresh from the open road, these are sturdy, straight-talking songs that see the good in you.

With their latest seventh album, Nightjar, ARIA Award winners The Vampires mark a watershed in their 15-year career, making them one of Australia’s most acclaimed acts. Melding saxophone and trumpet intricate melodies and expansive groove soundscapes into their austral-facing jazz textures, they effortlessly capture the essence of their genre-hopping ethos into an immersive musical experience.

The Vampires’ music is a visceral experience, deeply rooted in the expansive landscapes of Australia. Their sound is a blend of influences, shaped by their admiration for The Necks and enriched by collaborations with artists including Chris Abrahams, Lionel Loueke, Shannon Barnett and Dave Rodriguez (Godtet). This deep connection to their musical roots is evident in every note, showcasing their ability to merge composed and improvised parts seamlessly, creating a hypnotic flow that captivates listeners.

Supported by a rich history of performances and accolades, The Vampires have established themselves as a formidable force around the world. They have played at renowned venues and festivals including A Love Supreme Jazz Festival (UK), Enjoy Jazz Festival (DE) and all the major jazz festivals in Australia.
