June 3rd, 1992, remains one of the most significant dates in Australian history.

After more than a decade of advocacy led by Eddie Koiki Mabo and the Meriam people of Mer, the High Court of Australia delivered the landmark Mabo Decision that transformed the nation’s legal and moral landscape. In overturning the colonial doctrine of Terra Nullius, the Court formally recognised that our Peoples hold enduring connections and responsibilities to lands and waters.

Through the courage and determination of Eddie Mabo and the Meriam people, the Mabo decision compelled Australia to confront the truths our Peoples had always maintained. This continent was never empty. Australia’s history did not begin with British settlement. Our responsibilities to Country have continued despite colonisation.

𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 serves as an important reminder that addressing the ongoing impacts of colonisation and inequity is a shared responsibility. Governments, political leaders, institutions, systems and the broader Australian community all have a role to play in confronting racism and driving meaningful change for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Observed from 27 May to 03 June each year, National Reconciliation Week commemorates two significant milestones in Australia’s history the successful 1967 Referendum and the 1992 Mabo decision. This year’s theme ‘𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗜𝗻’ calls on Australians to commit to truth, equity, accountability and action.

Each year, National Sorry Day provides time for the nation to pause and acknowledge the harm caused to Australia’s Stolen Generations and to recognise the tireless work still underway to address the ongoing, intergenerational impacts of the forced removal of children under race-based government policies.

This year’s theme, 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗗𝗮𝘆: 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗦𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, calls on the government to take urgent steps to create tangible and measurable change within survivors’ lifetimes. The Stolen Generations are a recent part of Australia’s history, but we have lost many survivors over the decades, and time is running out for those who are left.

NAATSIHWP stands in solidarity with Stolen Generations Survivors and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the nation. We take this moment to recognise the work of the Healing Foundation.

NAATSIHWP is seeking a part-time experienced and highly organised 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗿 - 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 to join our team in a non-ongoing role. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to contribute to the successful delivery of an Indigenous-led Pacific region health workforce project with meaningful impact.

We are welcoming applicants to join our team who are committed to equity and justice in healthcare as well as supporting positive Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing outcomes through policy and program development.
