✨ EVENT RECAP: WiDA x WIIS-A | BALANCE THE SCALES ✨

What a night.

Thank you to everyone who joined and the Women in Defence Association for our first-ever Melbourne collaboration ahead of International Women’s Day. Balance the Scales brought together leaders, emerging professionals and changemakers from across the defence and national security community for an evening of insight, connection and honest conversation.

We were especially honoured by a surprise keynote from The Hon Peter Khalil MP, Assistant Minister for Defence, who reflected on the legacy of women in service, Australia’s current defence posture, and why diversity is not a “nice to have”, it’s a national capability.

Our incredible panellists: Jo Teagle, Michelle Campbell, Amanda Gorely, Charlotte O’Connor, Peter Kalatzis and Professor Maria Rost Rublee, unpacked:

• The evolving rules-based international order• Australia’s National Defence Strategy & Integrated Investment Program• Critical infrastructure and ageing capability platforms (because it’s not all AUKUS 👀)• The Community Mobilisation Plan• The gender pay gap• And why gender matters for durable peace outcomes

The message was clear: these conversations can’t be confined to one day a year. Networks like ours exist to elevate diverse voices shaping Australia’s security future, every day.

A huge thank you to our generous sponsors Clayton Utz for making the evening possible.

And to the powerhouse teams behind the scenes, WiDA (Rachel, Cai Lin & Reena) and WIIS-A (Grace, Nina & Winnie) - we see you. 👏

⚖️ The scales don’t balance themselves.

This International Women’s Day, we’re bringing together Women in Defence and the WIIS-A community in Melbourne to talk strategy, leadership, and what real progress looks like.

National Defence Strategy.
Gender equity.
Inclusive leadership.

Because representation in security isn’t symbolic, it’s strategic.
