ALIA is pleased to partner with the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing support International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) Storytime Takeovers in public and school libraries around Australia throughout November 2026.

1 in 5 Australians live with a disability, and libraries are well placed to build greater awareness, understanding and acceptance within communities.

Libraries can get involved in any way, big or small. You might:

📖 Feature stories, songs and activities inclusive of all abilities
🎤 Invite someone with lived experience of disability to lead a storytime
🗓️ Host one special storytime — or a whole month of activities
📚 Create displays showcasing books, podcasts and other resources that build awareness and understanding of disability

💲 40 ALIA Institutional Member organisations can receive $500 to help cover the cost of engaging a facilitator with lived experience of disability.

🏆 Nominations are now open for the NSW Library & Information Excellence Award 2026, administered by ALIA NSW!

Know someone doing exceptional work in libraries and information services across NSW? Now’s the time to give them the recognition they deserve.

Now in its third year, the award celebrates individuals making a meaningful impact across the sector — whether through an innovative service, creative program, successful partnership, new technology or outstanding contribution to their community.

Nominations are open to individuals working in the LIS sector or LIS research across NSW who are financial members of ALIA (personal or institutional), and can be submitted by managers, colleagues, peers or through self-nomination.

🏆 The winner will be announced at a special industry celebration at the State Library of NSW on Friday 27 November 2026.

🏆 Congratulations to James Baker AALIA (DCP) from Melbourne Athenæum Library, winner of the 2nd inaugural Victorian Library and Information Award!

James was announced as this year’s VLIA winner at the ALIA Vic Book Week Soirée at narrm ngarrgu Library on Friday 28 August. 🎉

As Secretary of the ALIA Graphic Novels and Comics committee, James has championed the value, diversity and legitimacy of comics and graphic novels in libraries. His contributions also include developing graphic novel events for Melbourne Rare Book Week, playing a key leadership role on the Mechanics' Institute Australia Bicentenary 2027 Committee , and contributing to ALIA’s Freedom to Read Group.

Across these initiatives, James has demonstrated vision, collaboration and a deep commitment to strengthening libraries, championing inclusion and supporting underrepresented voices.

A huge congratulations to James on this well-deserved recognition, and to all of the outstanding candidates shortlisted for this year’s award!

📚 On Australian School Library Day, we’re celebrating the power of school libraries to create lifelong readers.

ALIA, the Australian Coalition for School Libraries (ACSL) and Australia Reads have today released the new Statement on School Libraries and Reading for Pleasure.

Reading for pleasure is linked to positive outcomes across education, health and wellbeing. Alongside quality reading instruction, students need genuine opportunities to choose, discover and enjoy books — supported by well-resourced school libraries, diverse and representative collections, and qualified library staff.

The new statement provides guidance for schools to develop effective policy and practice around reading for pleasure, and gives school library staff a valuable resource to support planning and advocacy within their schools and networks.

We encourage school leaders, educators, parents and library staff to read and share the statement, and help make reading for pleasure an integral part of every student’s school experience.

🌿 Bibliotherapy in the School Library 🪑

Reading for pleasure has proven benefits for health and education outcomes.

Bibliotherapy in the School Library (Virtual) is a reflective, invitational approach to reading that supports wellbeing and connection. It helps you create the conditions where children and young people can experience reading in more open and meaningful ways.

This 7-week facilitated course (4 levels, ~6 hrs/week, 30 CPD hours) explores how stories can be offered in calm, open ways without pressure to perform or interpret. It is designed specifically for school library contexts.

This is the first time this course has been offered, so be at the forefront of the gentle reading wave.
