YMCA Canberra Space Squad

YMCA Canberra Space Squad is Australia’s only residential holiday camp program for students in Years 6-9 who love Space!

It is an action-packed school holiday space experience that you won’t want to miss.

For 5-days, we learn all about space, meeting scientists, engineers, physicists, astronomers and Astrophysicists, who are working on NASA missions.

We’ll visit and experience the Advanced Instrument and Technology Centre (AITC) and touch satellites, look at dwarf galaxies orbiting around Centaurs A, hear about how stars collide and the first ripples in space which are known as gravitational waves, as well as visiting NASA deep space communications complex and launching rockets and flying drones. Phheww and these are just some of the experiences we have when you join our action-packed Space Squad!

We also answer questions like how do we get to Mars? How does Australia contribute to the Global Space Industry? What’s it like to be an astronaut?

Camps are held in Canberra with participants staying at the YMCA Bush Capital Lodge.

Why Canberra? There is considerable level of private and public space infrastructure already in Canberra, including Optus' ground station in Hume, the Canberra Deep Space Communication Centre, and the National Computational Infrastructure super computer at the ANU. Other infrastructure includes the AITC and EOS laser ranging telescope at Mt Stromlo, and the Concurrent Design Facility and Falcon telescope at UNSW Canberra.

The Space Squad camps are organised by YMCA Canberra, who have organised and delivered camps and children’s activities for over 75 Years in Canberra. Each camp has an experienced camp leader, as well as a team of dedicated volunteers.

Future Camps: 8 - 12 July 2019 30 September to 4 October 2019

Costs: $550.00 - Includes all activities, meals and accommodation during the event. Please note, this does not include transport to and from Canberra.
