Yesterday marked an incredible milestone for the Turner One Development, with the official “Top Out” event celebrating how far this dream has come.
What many people don’t see is that this journey actually began over 8.5 years ago with a simple meeting held on the old Turner site between Cheryl O’Donnell (CEO, Canberra PCYC), Terry Shaw (Divercity) and former CHC CEO Andrew Hannan. Back then, it was just an idea and a shared vision — to create something that would genuinely change lives for young people and our community. Yesterday, standing on the roof of the building watching that vision become reality was a truly emotional and proud moment.
Once complete, Turner One will deliver 55 affordable apartments, including 10 dedicated homes for young people aged 16–24 who need safety, support and a pathway forward.
We were honoured to welcome so many incredible guests and supporters who have helped make this project possible, including Her Excellency the Governor-General of Australia, Sam Mostyn AC, representatives from CHC, Core Developments Australia, The Snow Foundation, ACT Government and Australian Government representatives, along with Minister Yvette Berry, Alicia Payne, David Pocock, Stephen Byron, Scarlet Gaffey Carolyn Ludovici, Megan Parsons, Paul Chapman, Nathan Dal Bon, Terry Shaw, Kate Wisbey, Vicki Williams, Andrew McIntosh, Canberra PCYC Board Members, and many others who have backed this vision from the beginning.
One of the most special moments of the day, however, had nothing to do with speeches or photos. It was seeing the smiles on the faces of the four young people from Canberra PCYC who thanks to the support from HILTI Tools and Core Developments Australia will soon begin work experience onsite during the fit-out stage of the development.
As CEO, that moment said everything.
Because this is why we do what we do every single day at Canberra PCYC. It’s about creating opportunities. It’s about giving young people hope, skills, confidence and pathways into employment and independence. It’s about building futures — not just buildings.
We also had one of our Catering Vans onsite with young people providing coffees, and the lunch. We can't wait for the Opening when we will have everyone who gave their time to get this off the ground there to celebrate with us
To everyone who has believed in this project over the past 8.5 years — From the Canberra PCYC Board, Cheryl, Rikki and team, thank you. The dream is finally coming alive. ❤️
