In horrific news, the ACT Government will kill 3633 kangaroos across Canberra's nature reserves this year.
The official figure does not include pouch young and dependent at-foot joeys, whose deaths are not reflected in the Government's total.
Families will be torn apart. Mothers, fathers and young will all be affected. They are sentient individuals with relationships, bonds and lives that matter to them.
Behind every cull statistic is an individual animal.
Behind every quota is a kangaroo family.
We live in a world where the large-scale killing of animals, including native wildlife, has become normalised. The language of “conservation” is routinely used to justify violence against kangaroos and other animals. But how can so-called “ecologists” reconcile claims of “care” and “protection” with practices that involve domination, coercion and killing?
In response, the community will maintain a vigilant presence at Canberra's reserves throughout the cull, monitoring the operation, documenting its impacts and speaking out against the killing of kangaroos.
This work is only possible because of the dedication of volunteers who are prepared to stand up for Canberra's kangaroos. If you're interested in helping out, please get in touch.
