The cull has now ended.

You’d be forgiven for not knowing that, though — because the ACT Government hasn’t bothered to announce it.

Usually, in the last week of July, the public is told that the annual kangaroo cull has ended and how many kangaroos and joeys were killed.

We are well into August.

No announcement that the cull has ended.
No kill numbers.
No media release.
No information provided to advocacy groups.

Nothing.

And would you look at that — the ACT Government, usually so keen to defend this program entrenched in violence, has suddenly gone very quiet.

How convenient.

This is a taxpayer-funded killing program carried out on public nature reserves. The public has every right to know what was done and how many kangaroos and their joeys were killed.

So, ACT Government:

How many kangaroos did you kill?

And why the silence?

For the first time in a long time, kangaroo shooting is continuing into the final week of the cull, suggesting target numbers have not been reached at some reserves.

Today, someone found the truck, trailer and tractor used to collect and remove kangaroo bodies at Majura, confirming that shooting is still underway at Majura/Ainslie. Also spotted at Mulligans Flat and quite likely Googong.

This should alarm everyone. As the deadline approaches (July 31), pressure to complete the cull will only intensify. When quotas take priority, there are serious animal welfare concerns about what that pressure could mean for the kangaroos still left alive.

After seven weeks of relentless shooting, the few survivors deserve to be left in peace.

After weeks of shooting, this is what remains at Crace Grasslands Nature Reserve.

What makes this even harder to comprehend is that there are now more cattle than kangaroos on this nature reserve. Healthy native kangaroos have been killed because they are portrayed as a threat to the environment, while introduced cattle are brought onto the same reserve under the banner of “ecological grazing.”

It is an extraordinary contradiction. Native kangaroos belong in these ecosystems. Cattle do not.

The killing continues.

On Monday night, shooters were operating at Gungaderra, Ainslie/Majura and Googong.

Tonight, they are back at The Pinnacle, Mulligans and Googong.

Kangaroos this week will be butchered on site after they are shot.

The operation appears to be extending later than usual as they normally conclude at this time. They must be struggling to reach their quota. After such high kill numbers last year, what on earth did they expect???

As always, we have people out again tonight, protesting, monitoring and documenting the operation.

Kangaroo families continue to be slaughtered. We won’t stop watching, documenting and speaking out until the killing ends.

This week has been a bloodbath for Canberra’s kangaroos. Crace, Mulanggari, Red Hill, Farrer Ridge, and then the Pinnacle and Mount Ainslie/Majura again… and again… and again. 💔

A heartbreaking and deeply traumatic week for our kangaroos, for the defenders who stood with them through shot after shot, and for the supporters who walked the reserves the following day to witness the aftermath. 💔💔💔

Last night, advocates witnessed and documented the shooting of kangaroos at Red Hill Nature Reserve and Crace Grasslands.

At Red Hill, we watched shooters move through the reserve in a quad bike. They took aim. Fired. Then drove on to the next kangaroo.

From where we stood, we did not see them get out of the quad to check whether each kangaroo was dead before moving on. We did not see any immediate checking of pouches.

We saw them shoot. Drive on. Shoot again.

The gunfire continued throughout the night.

For those of us standing in the darkness listening, every shot carried the sickening knowledge of what it meant. Another kangaroo shot. A joey still inside their dead mother’s pouch. An at-foot joey nearby, now orphaned.

Shot after shot.

Multiple advocates remained stationed across Red Hill and Crace Grasslands throughout the night, watching, monitoring and documenting.

More shooting tonight at Crace Grasslands and Red Hill Nature Reserve tonight.

We have defenders stationed at both reserves, observing, monitoring and documenting the killing.

The ACT Government and its contractors Strathbogie may close the gates and carry out this violence under the cover of darkness, but they do not get to do it unseen.

We are watching. We are recording. And we are not going away.
