Meet Caroline đź‘‹

As Executive & Special Projects Officer, Caroline keeps Havelock running behind the scenes. One day she is advising the CEO or chairing a project meeting. The next, she is reviewing a policy, planning an event or keeping the fridge stocked. She would not have it any other way.

Caroline arrived in Canberra in 2025, bringing a background in mental health and a genuine drive to work somewhere that makes a difference. The community housing sector has been a steep learning curve, but she could not ask for a better team to learn alongside.

We are glad her latest chapter landed here.

Do you have a genuine passion for the Canberra community, and real empathy for people in vulnerable housing situations?

If you answered yes, you may be a good fit for working with Havelock, as we are now hiring a Tenancy Support Coordinator.

This role works closely with our residents, coordinates NDIS and disability support requirements, and helps people build the capacity to maintain their own tenancy.

No two days look the same. It is fast paced, hands on and genuinely rewarding.

If this sounds like you, or someone you know, we would love to hear from you.

August tenant of the month: Nigel.

From helping out with OzHarvest to looking out for the people around him, Nigel brings a warmth and generosity to the Havelock community that our staff notice every time.

Pleasant on every encounter, helpful without being asked and exactly the kind of person who makes a place feel like home.

Congratulations Nigel.

More than 40 years ago, a group of Canberrans decided that people mattered more than profit.

They picketed in harsh conditions. They showed up when institutions did not. They fought for housing as a basic right and refused to leave their community behind.

From that commitment, Havelock Housing was born.

Today, we are:
• The ACT's oldest frontline community housing provider.
• Home to over 400 active tenancies across rooming and independent housing.
• A community of people who believe housing saves lives.

People before profit. Then, now and always.

Today the Havelock team had a very exciting day, delivering Havelock House's historic plans to the National Archives of Australia (NAA).

To have our history acknowledged and protected at a national level is something we are genuinely proud of. These are not just drawings on paper. They are the blueprints of a community.

Today is World Humanitarian Day, a day to recognise the people who show up for others, often in difficult circumstances and rarely with enough recognition.

In the homelessness sector, that is every single day.

To our team at Havelock Housing, and to every person working across Canberra's homelessness and community housing sector: what you do matters. The difficult conversations, the complex cases, the small wins that never make the news.

Havelock saves lives because our people choose to show up. We are proud of every one of them.

There is an invisible population in Canberra that needs access to healthcare and has nowhere to turn.

Street Side Medics is working to change that. Their GP-led mobile clinic now operates weekly in Civic at the Griffin Centre on Genge Street, providing free, no-judgement medical care to anyone experiencing homelessness or insecure housing. Regardless of name, Medicare status or living situation, no one is turned away.

The team is made up entirely of volunteers who are there because they genuinely care. And in a city where bulk-billing rates are low and medical services are stretched, that matters.

What does homelessness look like for a young person in Canberra?

Sometimes it is a couch that runs out by the end of the week. Sometimes it is a car parked somewhere quiet. Sometimes it is simply nowhere to go at all.

Today is International Youth Day. In the ACT, young adults aged 19 to 24 are among those most significantly affected by homelessness. The reasons are rarely simple:

▪️Leaving home environments that are unsafe.
▪️Moving out of home without adequate and ongoing support.
▪️A rental market that is simply out of reach.
▪️Mental health challenges that go unsupported.

At Havelock Housing, we provide housing and wraparound support for young Canberrans at some of the most critical moments of their lives.

Homelessness Week 2026 has drawn to a close.

Last week, we gathered as a community for the first ever Havelock Memorial Vigil to Canberra's Homeless. We lit candles, shared stories and held a minute of silence for those we have lost.

What comes next is the harder part: the sustained, essential work of ensuring no Canberran dies from homelessness.

Havelock Housing will keep showing up, we hope you will too.
