Anti-Poverty Week is underway, running through to 17 October.

Poverty rarely arrives on its own. It shows up alongside housing stress, and once housing becomes unaffordable, everything else gets harder:

👨‍⚕️ Access to healthcare
🏫 Stability for kids at school
🌳 The ability to plan more than a week ahead

Safe, affordable housing is not just shelter, it is the foundation that helps people climb out of poverty for good.

Where did you sleep last night? For most of us, that question barely registers.

Saturday marked World Homeless Day, and for too many Canberrans, a safe place to sleep is still not a given.

Since 2015, Havelock Housing has supported more than 2,000 people. Today, we provide over 400 active tenancies across the ACT. But the need has not gone away, and neither has our commitment.

Last week, our team was in front of the cameras for an interview about homelessness in Canberra, ahead of World Homelessness Day on 10 October and Anti-Poverty Week from 11 October.

Days like these matter because they shine a light on an issue that is too often hidden. Homelessness and poverty are closely linked, and both are felt right here in our city.

Ahead of World Mental Health Day tomorrow, our tenants came together for an afternoon of calm 🌿

We hosted an event filled with mindfulness activities, breathing exercises and relaxation strategies. We also shared positive statements and words of wisdom, because sometimes a kind sentence is exactly what someone needs to hear.

Looking after your mental health does not have to be complicated. Sometimes it starts with slowing down, taking a breath and spending time with people who care.

Zoe is a strong advocate for affordable and accessible housing, particularly for students and residents of the Canberra Student Housing Co-operative. They speak up on the issues that matter, openly and often, and shows a genuine commitment to supporting those around them. Their willingness to engage with Havelock and Zoe's ongoing support of the Co-op has made a meaningful difference to our community.

Menslink has been supporting the mental health and wellbeing of young men across Canberra for many years. Their breakfast events bring the business community together around a cause that truly matters.

The work Menslink does is a reminder that showing up for people through their hardest moments, whatever form that takes, is always worth it.

International Day of Peace is a day to reflect on what it truly means to feel safe.

Peace is not just the absence of conflict. It is the presence of safety, stability and dignity. It is knowing you have somewhere secure to sleep tonight and somewhere to return to tomorrow.

For the people Havelock Housing supports, a safe home is not a luxury. It is the foundation that makes everything else possible: health, recovery, connection and hope.

On this day, we recommit to the belief that housing is a human right and that every Canberran deserves the peace of a place to call home.

The Government announced yesterday that $300 million allocated to crisis and transitional housing loans under the Housing Australia Future Fund will now be delivered as grants.

Havelock welcomes the announcement’ as a provider of accommodation and services for the homeless in Canberra’s community.
