The family of Julia Miller Thoron has asked those who knew her to reach out to PFLAG groups across the world and make donations in her name.
Len from Canberra is fulfilling that wish, as his family is doing in other parts of Australia.
We're sharing the post from PFLAG San Francisco who knew Julia best. In part, so we learn a little about this giant, in part so that the community on the other side of the planet can find that, even in death, Julia continues to make a mark.
Much love to all who knew her, PFLAG Capital Region (Australia)

Today we’re grieving the loss Julia Miller Thoron (1940–2026) — a beloved past leader of PFLAG San Francisco who helped shape this chapter with equal parts steadiness and heart.
For 24 years, Julia and her husband Sam (1939-2018) showed up for families — not as an abstract idea, but as a practice: listen first, welcome fully, and keep the door open. Together, they made PFLAG San Francisco feel like home.
One parent said it best: “The first few times I came to a meeting… I felt so reassured by Julia… she made me feel that everything could turn out OK.”
That’s the legacy: people leaving our space more supported, more grounded, more ready to love their LGBTQ+ family members out loud.
If Julia touched your life… even once… please share a memory in the comments. A sentence. A moment. The way she made you feel. Let’s hold her story together.
Our mission remains: To create a caring, just, and affirming world for LGBTQ+ people and those who love them. We carry Julia and Sam’s legacy forward.
