The AI Committee of the American Society for Indexing is pleased to announce we have released our newest white paper, "AI and Indexing: Trajectory Data". We find that AI's ability to index has not improved significantly over the last year: https://asindexing.org/ai-news/ai-book-indexing-trajectory-data/

From Indexing Society of Canada:

ISC/SCI Virtual Conference 2026: Keynote Speaker Danny Bate!
Danny Bate’s keynote address "Who ordered the alphabet?" will be an anti-chronological journey into the English alphabet, starting in the present day with the 26 characters that indexers know all too well. Progressing backwards in time, through the alphabet’s stages of development, the talk aims to explain why our letters look and function the way they do, and why they come with an order, from A through to Z. The contributions of various historical peoples, such as the ancient Greeks and Phoenicians, will be explored, as will a common theme: that nothing about our alphabet is fixed. Even its order could have been radically different.
Dr. Danny Bate is a linguist and writer. Holding three academic degrees in linguistics, he has for many years worked to share his field with the public. "Why Q Needs U", his book about the alphabet, was published in 2025.
Explore the fascinating history of the alphabet together with your colleagues! Register now:

On freedom to read: From Neil at Indexers Discussion Group. During Banned Books Week (October 2025), the Hawaii library system banned displays that referred to ‘Banned Books Week’!

Last week Lani Kawahara, who oversees the young adult section at Kauai’s largest library, set up her annual display to mark Banned Books Week, a national campaign that kicked off Sunday to spotlight the harms of book censorship in America.
