Pedal Power ACT

Pedal Power ACT Canberraโ€™s peak cycling organisation and a strong voice for everyone who rides. Authorised by I. Ross, Pedal Power ACT, Canberra

We advocate for safer streets, better paths and more connected routes across the ACT. Pedal Power ACT represents the interests of people who ride bikes in the ACT, and the many more who would ride if it were easier and safer to do so. Pedal Power ACT strives to protect and promote the importance of bike-riding to the ACT community. Pedal Power ACT works collaboratively with its members, stakeholde

rs, the community and government to achieve this goal. More people riding bikes in the ACT would improve the health of our population, help the environment by reducing pollution and ease pressure on congested traffic networks. Making the ACT a better place to ride a bike will bring financial reward to the local economy through cycle tourism opportunities, and increasing custom for local businesses. Pedal Power ACT wants more Canberrans riding bikes, more often, for a better community.

We thought it was about time weโ€™d reintroduce ourselves ๐Ÿ‘‹

Weโ€™re Pedal Power, a community for people who ride and everyone who wants a safer, healthier and more sustainable Canberra.

You donโ€™t need a fancy bike, a Strava account or even to call yourself โ€œa cyclistโ€. You might ride to work, uni or the shops, head out with friends on the weekend, train on the road or be thinking about riding for the first time. However you ride, thereโ€™s a place for you here.

We advocate for safer streets and better bike connections, help people build their skills, organise social rides and programs, bring the community together and give our members added peace of mind through bike riding insurance.

We also know individual choices alone wonโ€™t solve climate change. Thatโ€™s why we push for infrastructure that makes sustainable transport a safe, practical and realistic choice for more people.

Because better streets and more transport choices benefit everyone, whether or not they ride.

If youโ€™re new here, welcome to Pedal Power ๐Ÿšฒ

The belco owl gets it ๐Ÿ‘€

Helmet? On. Bike? Ready. Spring? Here.

And while youโ€™re covering your head, you may as well cover the rest of you too.
Pedal Power membership = insurance cover while you ride.

Be like the big beautiful owl. Cover yourself this spring. ๐Ÿ’™

The 2026 ACT and Queanbeyan-Palerang Household Travel Survey begins today, Monday 31 August.

If your household is randomly selected, remember to record every bike trip on your assigned day, including short rides to the shops, school, work or a bus stop.

These everyday journeys help show how many people rely on bikes and why Canberra needs safe, connected cycling infrastructure.

The survey is not open to the public, so you cannot register independently, but if it reaches your household, make your rides count.

The Pedal Power community remains shocked and deeply saddened by the recent crash on Gungahlin Drive, which led to the death of one person riding a bike and left others injured.

Everyone who is entitled to use our roads should be able to do so safely, and feel safe, regardless of who they are or how they travel. This applies to every road user, including people riding bikes on roads with higher speed limits.

That right to safety does not depend on the type, quality or condition of someoneโ€™s bike. Nor should unsupported speculation about the ridersโ€™ behaviour, lights or equipment form part of this discussion, particularly where it risks implying that those who were struck may have been responsible. People riding bikes are legitimate road users, and it is simply not acceptable for them to be hit from behind.

A comprehensive investigation into this tragedy should consider every relevant factor, including driver behaviour, vehicle roadworthiness, compliance with road rules and whether the design and condition of the road contributed to the crash. The role of infrastructure must be taken seriously when investigating fatal and serious crashes if we are to prevent them from happening again.

Pedal Power will continue advocating for everyone entitled to use our roads to be able to do so safely and efficiently. We will keep working with the community, government and other stakeholders to achieve lasting improvements, reduce the likelihood of another tragedy and preserve the important role of bicycles in the ACTโ€™s transport system.

We all deserve to be safe on our roads.

This is not acceptable.

The current arrangement at the Northbourne Avenue slip-lane crossing outside ABC Canberra creates a serious hazard for people riding and walking.

Safety and accessibility must be built in from the outset, not addressed only after the community complains. The site must be made safe immediately, and the responsible agencies need to explain how this was allowed to happen.

Thank you Thomas Emerson for raising it.

Pedal Power ACT is devastated by the death of a rider following a crash involving a driver and three people riding bicycles on Gungahlin Drive this morning.
Our deepest condolences go to the family and friends of the person who died. We are also thinking of the two injured riders, the driver, the emergency services personnel who responded and everyone affected. We sincerely hope for the best possible outcome for those still receiving care.
This tragedy will be deeply felt across Canberra, particularly within our close-knit cycling community. Everyone deserves to get home safely, regardless of how they travel.
