Canberra Writers Festival has partnered with our Yarn & Rethread team to make book bags for the upcoming festival. This evening we will attend their festival launch and 10 year celebrations, showcasing over 60 unique reversable bags we have made, all from donated fabrics.

We are so grateful for this opportunity to complete a large order which has really kick started our business operations and provide work for three migrant women.

We are excited to fulfill this and any future requests, so please reach out by emailing [email protected] if you are looking for upcycled merchandise or gifts for your next commercial event!

When was the last time you went to dinner without knowing exactly how the night would unfold?

On Thursday 1 October, TEDxCanberra and Cafe Stepping Stone are turning dinner into something a little more unexpected.

You'll take a seat at a communal table.

You'll share dishes inspired by the cultures, traditions and personal stories of Cafe Stepping Stone's chefs and team.

You'll hear some of the stories behind the food.

And between courses, we'll give the table a little TEDxCanberra treatment—with conversation starters and moments designed to get you beyond the usual small talk.

You might arrive with friends.

You might sit beside someone you've never met.

You might leave having had a conversation you weren't expecting.

And that's rather the point.

Come gather around the table for a special Sudanese feast, lovingly prepared by Amani and our Stepping Stone team.

Experience the rich flavours, comforting dishes and generous hospitality of Sudan, while sharing stories, food and community. A beautiful evening to slow down, connect and enjoy something new together.

🎉 Stepping Stone opened in Canberra 6 years ago!! 🥳

It is pretty amazing to reflect on what we have achieved through hard work, a strong mission and so much individual, community and government support.🥰

Over the last 6 years, 120 women gained economic empowerment, foundational and job specific skills to work competently in hospitality, horticulture and other industries with us. 💪🏾👩🏻‍🍳👩🏽‍🌾

We have provided our beneficiaries, migrant and refugee women who face multiple barriers to work, with over $3 million in wages and superannuation!!!
71 of those women had never worked in Australia before, and 39 had never had a job before.😮

We have diversified so we can provide a variety of jobs and training.
Now, in addition to cafes we have jobs in events & catering, horticulture with the our Urban Farm and sewing through circular economy projects. 🧵

In collaboration wth other social enterprises, we've started Social Capital's For Purpose Markets which run on the first Saturday of each month in the DKB hall next to our Dickson cafe. Yes, that's tomorrow! And to celebrate our 6 years we will have free cupcakes for all customers ! 🧁🧁🧁🧁🧁

We’re proud to have completed our Nature in the City: Cooling Your Suburbs project, proudly supported by the ACT Government.

Our west-facing terrace has been transformed with wicking garden beds, edible and native plants, grapevines and a demonstration living wall to create a cooler, greener and more welcoming space for our community.

One of the most rewarding parts of this project was learning what works best. Building on an earlier feasibility study, we refined the design to deliver a more resilient and water-efficient solution that will continue to thrive for years to come.

A huge thank you to the ACT Government for supporting this initiative, and to Greenlight Building Innovations for bringing the project to life.
