Canberra Q***r Film Festival 2026 - Opening Night: Song Lang (Special Invitation)

Set in 1980s Ho Chi Minh City, Linh Phung (Vietnamese pop star Isaac) is the star of a travelling Cai Luong (a form of traditional Vietnamese folk opera) troupe who has found himself deeply in debt with a local loan shark.

When unruly debt collector Dung (Lien Binh Phat) is sent to collect the money, the two form an unlikely bond neither could have foreseen. As Dung’s stern exterior begins to break, Linh Phung starts to see there’s far more to this violent brute than meets the eye.

An award-winning q***r tale of love, loss, and the fading tradition of Cai Luong.

Coming to Canberra’s cinema for the first time at our Opening Night - 14th September, 6:30 - 8:30pm. Age restriction: 15+ only.

A FREE Canberra Q***r Film Festival is coming!

With the theme of “Our Stories, Our Love," Canberra Q***r Film Festival will celebrate colourful and diverse stories written by and for the LGBTIQA+ community and allies in Australia and around the world.

Kicking the event off on both days will be our short film collections - “Q***rness at the Intersection” on the 14th and “Q***r New Wave” on the 15th. These include a total of 14 short films coming from 13 countries around the globe.

The Opening Night on 14th September will feature Song Lang (Viet Nam) - a genre-blending q***r tale of love, loss and the fading tradition of Cai Luong (a form of traditional Vietnamese folk opera) set in 1980s Saigon.

On the 15th September night, Australian q***r comedy icon - The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - will come back in a special tribute screening. Buckle up and get on this road trip to Alice Springs in the Priscilla lavender bus with us one more time.

Closing the festival will be Montreal, My Beautiful (Canada) - coming fresh from its Australian Premiere at the Q***r Screen Film Festival in Sydney to have this special Canberra Premiere. Starring Joan Chen in a career-defining role, it’s a touching story about a mother navigating late-in-life q***r discovery.

Edan (19) and Dula (18) navigate love, identity, and self-acceptance on a journey about coming into oneself and out to the world. Confronting fear, shame, and societal expectations, the boys rediscover a sense of belonging in their own paradise.

A celebration of q***r love, vulnerability, and the power of embracing who you are.
