“A supportive creative community for visual arts and artists”

ASOC OBJECTIVES

To:
· develop skills, knowledge and understanding of the visual arts;
· maintain a supportive and vibrant community amongst its members;
· provide relevant information about events and activiti

es in the visual arts;
· organise activities for doing art in a supportive group setting;
· organise exhibitions to display members’ art; and
· support and promote the practice of the visual arts in the ACT and · region. ASOC is a community of approximately 200 members who have been meeting to share their ideas, enthusiasm and inspiration for more than 83 years – that is an awful lot of knowledge and experience to share. We meet on a monthly basis, organise a Summer Art Experience (a week of art under expert tuition), as well as exhibitions, workshops, and regular classes throughout the year which are open to members and non-members. Come along as a guest, or join us – we are a friendly society, always ready to welcome new members. We offer local and distant membership – for those too far away to attend regular meetings and events. There is always a lot happening and a lot of support for those who wish to develop their skills and knowledge further or just meet with like-minded people. We cater for those over 18 years of age from the novice, those returning to art after a period of absence, those who need a confidence boost to those who are emerging artists. Some of our members are professional artists who offer classes and workshops to share their skills and knowledge. Membership Information: http://www.asoc.net.au/4456/About-ASOC/Membership/

ABOUT THE CREATIVE DRAWING GROUP from Convenor, Tim Hardy

The Creative Drawing group began life in 2016, and this exhibition celebrates 10 years of our art making. The group comes together weekly in the ASOC studio at the M16 art centre in Griffith, and sometimes works plein air in various locations around the ACT.

Our focus is on drawing, which these days can take many forms and use a wide variety of media. This diversity is well demonstrated in this exhibition. For a long time defining drawing has been a difficult task, but at its core is the notion that drawing involves mark making. A drawing is often valued for the evidence of an artist’s
thinking and feeling through the marks that have been made.

Drawing is widely acknowledged as the bedrock of a wide variety of art forms, including painting, sculpture and printmaking.

Currently our group consists of 19 artists, and some of those have been members of the group since it began. Some people love experimenting and do so frequently, while others focus on building on particular techniques and styles. In every session there is the opportunity for sharing what we do, stimulating and supporting each other.

What we all have in common is our love of drawing: we are Drawn to Draw!

'PAINT YOUR PET OR ANIMALS IN OILS' with John Hart

Three Sundays in April 2026

Students will learn basic realist painting techniques, including preparing a panel, how to transfer or draw your image ready for painting, colour mixing, and various painting techniques.

We will also talk about various paint mediums, supports, and brush styles and how they can be used to create different effects. At the end of the three days you will have a finished portrait of your pet, ready to hang.

Great for intermediate and advanced oil painters and an excellent introduction for beginners.

After the Day of the Triffids, a collaborative exhibition by Carol Cooke and Bobby Graham.

Inspired by John Wyndham’s The Day of the Triffids, the exhibition explores themes of transformation, survival and quiet resilience. Carol presents hand-formed vessels and sculptural works suggesting organic growth and mysterious life forms, while my layered digital artworks respond with imagery shaped by memory, observation and reconstruction.

The ASOC Portrait and Life Workgroup starts term 1 on Tuesday 3 February and we are hoping that ASOC Members with an interest in renewing or developing their portrait and life skills will join this friendly group.

The group meets from 10am to 1pm on Tuesday mornings during term time. In addition to the standard studio fee ($50 per term), a model fee (approximately $20 per week) is collected in advance at the start of the term.

Each term we have an equal mix of portrait or life sessions and there is usually a choice to work seated or standing at an easel.

Artists of all levels are welcome and any odourless medium may be used.

Our first workshop of the ASOC Summer Art 26 programme, ‘A Brush with Water!’, took place at the ASOC Studio on 5-7 January.

The amazing watercolour artist Antoinette Blyth travelled from Melbourne to share her exceptional skills and techniques.

Helen Jensma, one of the participants, shared her experience:

‘I learned so much. While I did not produce a fine, finished painting, the tutor gave out so much information and inspiration that I will take a long while to digest it all'.
