Centre for Invasive Species Solutions

Centre for Invasive Species Solutions The Centre for Invasive Species Solutions creates solutions to managing invasive species in Australia.

We work with Australia’s leading researchers to understand the benefits of managing invasive species and the impacts they have on our environment, native animals and primary production. We develop new solutions to improve detection and surveillance, inform the response of authorities to new incursions, and control pest animals. We develop research pipelines that support the creation of new genetic

technologies and new biocontrol technologies. We translate invasive species science into practical solutions and make them available through a suite of interconnected platforms and apps. And we support the adoption of best practices, tools and technologies by hosting the National Wild Dog Management Coordinator and the National Feral Cat and Fox Management Coordinator.

In one Queensland town, a wildlife carer is so concerned about the Indian myna's threat to native species, she has self-funded a bounty program that offers $5 for every bird humanely caught.

Tiny but mighty 🌱

After the devastating 2019–20 bushfires destroyed more than 90% of their habitat, the critically endangered Kangaroo Island dunnart is showing signs of recovery thanks to artificial shelters and ongoing conservation efforts. A powerful reminder that habitat restoration and predator management can make a real difference for native wildlife. 🐾

Artificial habitats are giving the Kangaroo Island dunnart a chance at recovery, after bushfires left them largely homeless.

Yesterday, we officially launched our first Reconciliation Action Plan - and what a moment it was. 🌿

Surrounded by Board members, partners and colleagues, we celebrated a milestone that reflects both where we’ve come from and where we’re going.

We were honoured to have Gregory Andrews, Lyrebird Dreaming, a member of our RAP Working Group, speak at the event and his words reminded us all of something important: for organisations involved in land management and conservation, reconciliation is not separate from core business. It is core business.

The RAP does not create these relationships. It strengthens them.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey - our RAP Working Group, our staff, the Juunjuwarra Rangers, North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance (NAILSMA), and Nana Norma Jacko for the extraordinary artwork behind this document.

Today, we’re proud to launch the Centre for Invasive Species Solutions' first Reconciliation Action Plan. 💚🖤❤️

The artwork you see here is Bubujuunjuwarra - 'Bubu' meaning homeland - created by Nana Norma Jacko, a proud Juunjuwarra Elder and Indigenous artist from Cape York. Her country spans the Starke River and its seas, the Great Barrier Reef catchment, and landscapes rich with some of Australia's largest turtle and dugong populations.

This artwork is not just beautiful. It is the story of a partnership.

Our CISS Feral Animal Projects team has been working alongside the Juunjuwarra Rangers and the North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance Ltd (NAILSMA) to protect Juunjuwarra Country from the damage caused by feral pigs. These animals destroy sacred sites, story places and the wetlands that have sustained Juunjuwarra people for thousands of years.

Together, we are combining traditional knowledge with modern tools - including GPS collaring to monitor and manage feral pig movement - to protect Country, culture and ecosystems.

Our RAP formalises what we already believe: that caring for Country and tackling invasive species cannot be separated. And that Australia will make better decisions when we bring together western science and the world's oldest continuing ecological knowledge.

This National Reconciliation Week, the theme is All In. And that is exactly where we are.

🦜 Today is - and for Australia's Orange-bellied Parrot, every day counts.

This tiny migratory bird is critically endangered. One of the key reasons? Invasive species.

The problem isn't coming. It's already here.
But so are the solutions - if we act together. 💚

🐦 Have you spotted a Common Myna in your neighbourhood?

Common are an invasive species that can aggressively compete with native birds for nesting spaces and food. In some cases, they can evict native birds from hollows, destroy eggs and even kill chicks, disrupting the breeding success of our native wildlife.

While they may seem like just another backyard bird, Common Mynas can have a serious impact on local biodiversity and the birds we love to see and hear in our gardens and parks.

The good news? Awareness and community action matter. Learning about invasive species is an important step in protecting native wildlife.

🦎🐦🐾 On International Day for Biological Diversity, we’re reminded that protecting Australia’s unique native species takes all of us.

In Australia, feral cats and foxes have a devastating impact on biodiversity, collectively killing an estimated 2.6 billion native animals every year in Australia.

At the Centre for Invasive Species Solutions (CISS), we’re proud to host the National Feral Cat and Fox Management Coordinator (NFC&FMC) Program, supporting national collaboration, research translation and practical action to reduce the impacts of feral predators on our native wildlife.

See the on-ground experiences of a wild dog management group at Wildash, Queensland. Landholders share how a coordinated approach to wild dog management is helping reduce livestock suffering and risks to human safety, while supporting the recovery of local bettong and quoll populations.

The National Wild Dog Management Coordinator, Greg Mifsud, is one of three National Coordinators based with CISS supporting best practice invasive species management across Australia.
