🕷️🐾 TICK PREVENTION: DON'T LET THESE TINY PARASITES BECOME A BIG PROBLEM!

Ticks may be tiny, but the danger they pose to our furry family members is very real. 💔 Tick paralysis can be life-threatening, and prevention is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your pet.

🌿 Think your pet is safe because they stay close to home? Think again!

Dogs who only walk through short grass or play in their own backyard can still pick up ticks. Even cats who never leave their catios can be at risk! 🐶🏡🐱

💚 HOW CAN YOU HELP PREVENT TICK PARALYSIS?

🛡️ 1. Use effective tick prevention
Speak with your veterinarian about the most appropriate tick prevention for your pet. Options include certain oral medications, topical treatments and tick collars.
The right choice depends on your pet's species, age, weight, health and local tick risks. Keep treatments up to date and follow the product instructions carefully.

📅 2. Keep prevention up to date
Don't wait until you find a tick to think about protection!
Ask your vet how frequently your chosen product needs to be administered or replaced, and set a reminder so you don't miss a dose.

🔎 3. Check your pet every day
Even when using tick prevention, regular tick searches are essential.
Carefully feel through your pet's coat and check around the head, ears, neck, under the collar, between the toes, under the legs and around the body.
Ticks can be difficult to spot, especially in thick coats.

🪮 4. Make grooming part of your routine
Regular brushing and grooming can help you discover ticks or unusual lumps hiding in your pet's coat.
Check your pet after outdoor adventures, but remember that ticks can also be picked up at home.

🌿 5. Be aware of your surroundings
Ticks can be present in gardens, grassy areas and bushland.
Avoiding high-risk areas where possible can help, but no environment is completely risk-free.

🐱 IMPORTANT FOR CAT OWNERS
Never assume a product labelled for dogs is safe for cats. Some dog tick treatments containing permethrin are highly toxic to cats and can be fatal. Always use a product specifically approved for your pet's species.

🚨 KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS

Tick paralysis may cause weakness, wobbliness, changes in the voice, vomiting or retching, difficulty breathing and collapse. Signs can progress quickly.

If you suspect tick paralysis, seek urgent veterinary attention immediately.
Don't wait for symptoms to worsen.

❤️ Remember: prevention is essential, and daily tick checks are still important even when your pet is protected.

A few minutes spent protecting your pet today could help prevent a serious veterinary emergency tomorrow.

Please share this post to help keep our furry family members safe! 🐾💚

🛑 Please note: Tick prevention products vary in how quickly they kill or affect ticks, and not every product protects against paralysis ticks. Be sure to check with your vet for a product with appropriate paralysis tick protection for your location, rather than assuming any flea and tick treatment will do the job.

🐾 Ninja – Not Everything Is Food! 🐾

Poor Ninja was feeling very unwell, so his worried mum rushed him to Canberra Cat Vet (CCV) for assessment and treatment. ❤️

It soon became clear that Ninja had eaten something he shouldn’t have, and urgent intervention was needed to prevent a potentially life-threatening situation. 🚨

Sadly, Ninja’s mum had already experienced a terrible run of bad luck. Just days earlier, another of her beloved pets had become critically ill, leaving her with almost no funds remaining to cover Ninja’s life-saving surgery. 😿

You know what they say about Murphy’s Law… sometimes, when it rains, it pours! 💔

Thankfully, the wonderful team at Canberra Cat Vet understood the situation. They knew that if Ninja’s mum had the funds available, she wouldn’t hesitate to pay for his treatment. Recognising that Ninja and his family met the eligibility criteria for ACT Pet Crisis Support Emergency Funding, the team urgently submitted an application for assistance.

Our volunteer committee acted quickly, and support was approved. 🙌💙

With that help, Ninja was able to have the surgery he desperately needed! 🏥🐈

While he was feeling a little sore and sorry for himself afterwards, we suspect Ninja might be rethinking his choice of snack. After all, even a cat with nine lives needs to be careful about what he puts in his mouth! 😹

✨ This is why ACT Pet Crisis Support exists. When unexpected veterinary emergencies strike and families are already doing it tough, we help bridge the financial gap so pets can receive the essential treatment they need.

A huge thank you to the compassionate team at Canberra Cat Vet for recognising the need, acting quickly and helping Ninja get his second chance. 💙🐾

🙏 Please help us continue supporting pets and their families through unexpected veterinary crises.

🐾 Tiny Vet Clinic Update from Wednesday 7 October 2026 🐶🐱

🥶 It was a chilly day at the Tiny Vet Clinic, with fresh winds keeping everyone on their toes!
The pups were busy chasing patches of sunshine while their owners did their best to shelter from the breeze. ☀️💨

A big thank you to Dr Kate and nurse Jamie from the RSPCA, who were a wonderful help once again. ❤️

Spud and his mum were especially grateful for the exercise plan Dr Kate prepared to help him on his road to recovery. 🐕‍🦺💪

Our fabulous nurses Mish and Tamara were kept busy dispensing medications, preparing vaccinations and ensuring patients moved smoothly between our two vets. 💉💊

Meanwhile, Dr Arul and our newest volunteer nurse, Katie, were busy with vaccinations, health checks, arthritis injections and, of course, spring allergy treatments! 🌸🐾

Here are a few of the lovely patients who brightened our day:

🐶 Bodega – This gentle boy is doing so well with his allergy treatment!
His mum is doing a wonderful job staying on top of his care, helping make life much more comfortable for this happy boy. ❤️

🐯 Tigger – This little cutie came in for his final vaccination and to get his parasite prevention sorted. With his family planning occasional trips to the coast, keeping him protected is an important part of getting ready for their adventures! 🌊🚗

🐕 Flynn – This handsome fellow came in for his check-up and vaccination. He was more than happy to enjoy cuddles from his mum while patiently waiting his turn. Nothing beats a little extra love during a vet visit! 🥰🐾

And a special shout-out to our wonderful team of vets, nurses and volunteers who continue to give their time and care to help keep our community's pets healthy and happy. 💕🐾

Every vaccination, health check and treatment makes a difference, helping pets receive essential veterinary care when their families need it most.

Thank you to everyone who makes the Tiny Vet Clinic possible! ❤️

As the temperature rises, so does the likelihood of snake encounters for our pets. Stay one step ahead with our expert tips on snake safety.

🐍 If heading into the bush keep your dogs on lead and stay out of long grass.
🐍 Remove rubble, building materials etc. from your backyard where snakes can hide.
🐍 Invest in snake proof fencing for your property.
🐍 Remove food scraps from outside that may attract rats (and therefore snakes).
🐍 Keep your grass short.
🐍 If you suspect or know there is a snake, keep your pet away and if needed get in touch with a snake catcher to have it relocated. Do not try to move the snake yourself!

If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake, take a deep breath and give your friendly and knowledgeable veterinary staff a call.
