When Jenny Hynson from The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne was a young doctor, she saw the need for formalised paediatric palliative care. Then she helped to make it a reality.

“The difference I see when families have good care is they don’t have regrets. That can really impact on how they grieve," she says.

Understanding the Shadows of Cancer: Beyond the Physical Battle

Did you know that the battle against cancer doesn’t just leave physical scars? Many survivors and warriors face a silent, often overlooked adversary: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Yes, the journey through cancer can lead to PTSD, much like the aftermath of other traumatic events.

Cancer’s relentless uncertainty, the intensity of treatments, and the fear of recurrence can linger in the mind long after the physical battles are won. It’s not just about fighting cancer; it’s about recognising and healing the mental wounds it inflicts.

🔍 Recognise the Signs: Automatic physical responses, nightmares, flashbacks, severe anxiety, and uncontrollable thoughts about the cancer experience are signals that it’s time to seek help.

💬 Open Conversations: Let’s break the stigma. Talking about mental health struggles should be as normal as discussing physical health challenges.

🤝 Support Systems: If you or someone you know is facing these shadows, reach out. Support groups, mental health professionals, and loving communities can make a world of difference.

🌈 Healing is Holistic: Remember, healing is not just about the body. It’s about the mind and soul too. Your feelings are valid, and seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Let’s spread awareness and compassion. Together, we can shine a light on the mental health struggles faced by cancer warriors and survivors. It’s okay to ask for help; you’re not alone in this fight. 💖
