TOMORROW AFTERNOON

Sharing on behalf of Palliative Care Nurses Australia

In the Top End, care does not begin with a checklist. It begins with relationships.

Kirstan Dowling, Kellum Steele and Patricia Spicer from Danila Dilba in Darwin will share their wisdom supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and what culturally safe care looks like in practice.

Through this conversation, they will explore what really matters when caring for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, how to approach those first interactions with respect, and how to build trust, even in busy clinical settings, along with practical guidance to support more confident and respectful care.

This is a thoughtful and practical session, with insights for your day-to-day practice.

This is not about having all the answers, but about listening, showing up with respect, and being open to learning.

Who doesn't love a little reminder that you're making a difference?

These are just a handful of comments we've received over the first couple of weeks of our EOFY appeal for Leo's Place.

From people across our community, we hear things like this every day and we agree:

🏡Leo's Place IS "A truly wonderful service." - thanks Louise!
🏡Leo's Place IS "such a help" and "It really {is} a home away from home" - you're welcome and thank you too Tracey!
🏡Leo's Place IS "an outstanding example of how organisations should care for their people" and DOES "create a safe, comforting space for recovery and rest" - you know it Shirsty!

You can make a difference right now by pledging a night at Leo's place and helping us to fill our calendar with care and support for people with a life-limiting illness, their carers and families.

Thanks to a generous bequest from the Ingram Family, we were able to design an innovative training program introducing support workers in the Aged Care Sector to Palliative Care. The training covers key areas including palliative care principles, recognising signs of end of life, symptom management, communication skills, and self-care for staff. We recently piloted delivery of the program to 22 staff at The Butler Canberra, where the feedback included "Ongoing training like this helps ensure our team continue to provide compassionate, respectful and confident support to our participants and families when it matters most. 💙
A big thank you to Professor Sarah Maslen from Palliative Care ACT for leading such a valuable session"
The training runs for under four hours and is delivered FREE of charge thanks to the Ingram Family Bequest.
If you would like to organise training for staff at your facility, please email [email protected] or reach out through this page.

What does respite look like?

Research into Leo’s Place recently found that carers described the service as a “lifeline”.

For some, respite meant:
• finally getting a full night’s sleep
• seeing friends for the first time in months
• attending their own medical appointments
• taking a break without worrying about their loved one

The research also found that the home-like, non-clinical environment helped carers feel comfortable using respite services and made it easier to accept support.

At Leo’s Place, it’s often the little things that make a big difference:
• a nourishing meal
• a peaceful environment
• good quality fresh linen
• warmth, community and care

This EOFY, we’re hoping to fund 365 nights at Leo’s Place.

At Leo’s Place, we’ve provided more than just a place to stay.

We’ve fostered warmth, community and care for clients, their carers and their families.

Sometimes it’s the little things that make a difficult time gentler:
• a nourishing meal
• a peaceful environment
• the comfort of good quality fresh linen
• the chance to rest awhile

While the ACT Government funds the base operational costs of Leo’s Place, community donations help fund these thoughtful extras that make a big difference.

This EOFY, we’re hoping to fund 365 nights at Leo’s Place.

You can pledge:
• 1 night — $150
• a weekend — $300
• a work week — $750

Or choose your own amount.
