tablished in 2019, due to the high unmet health and wellbeing needs of the local Aboriginal Community residing in Canberra’s North Western Ngunnawal region. Yerrabi Yurwang means to walk strong and was bestowed upon the organisation by esteemed and respected Ngunnawal Elder Aunty Agnes Shea OAM, who is also a Founding Board Member of Yerrabi and our Inaugural Patron. Yerrabi is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Service, which means it is owned and operated by Aboriginal People, for Aboriginal People, and so, we are committed to the principle of self-determination, whereby we seek to engage and empower the Aboriginal People and their Families who utilise Yerrabi’s services. Building Generations of Strong Thriving Aboriginal Children Families & Communities...! We are currently operating from the Margaret Hendry School in Taylor, (ACT); however, our long-term vision is to provide a wholistic one-stop-suite of Aboriginal child and family support services. This will entail providing supports to Aboriginal families, additionally including advocacy and support to navigate both ACT Government and non-government human services systems. Yerrabi Yurwang Aboriginal child and family supports, (what we do):
• listening to our children and their families to ensure they receive wholistic, culturally safe and respectful services;
• developing, promoting, encouraging, and advancing broad-based community education to promote Aboriginal health and wellbeing in the home and community;
facilitating the development and understanding of culturally safe and respectful services;
• promoting a safe and caring support program for Kinship carers;
• developing resilience and respect for Aboriginal language, stories, and culture, starting with the Yerrabi Women's Gathering Group; and
• linkage to additional culturally appropriate supports and services.
