๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Corangamite Uncovered โ€“ Wednesdays with a Dose of Local History!

With winter well and truly here, it's the perfect time to look back at one of Camperdown's rarest winter eventsโ€”a snowfall that transformed the town into a snowy playground over 120 years ago.

Snowfall in Camperdown, 1901

Snowfalls in Camperdown are very uncommon. A snowfall in 1901, shown in this photograph, was particularly heavy. The photograph was taken in Manifold Street, east of the Clock Tower. Rugged-up local residents are enjoying a "snowball fight". The building in the centre of the photograph is the original single-storey Leura Hotel, constructed in 1859. This was replaced with the current two-storey hotel in 1902. To the west of the hotel can be seen the Court House and Shire Hall.

From the collection at the Camperdown Heritage Centre.
๐Ÿ“ Open 10.00 am โ€“ 3.00 pm Tuesdays and the first Sunday of each month.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Corangamite Uncovered โ€“ Wednesdays with a Dose of Local History!

I ventured out to Lake Bookaar Wetlands this week with camera in hand, and it certainly didn't disappoint.

Lake Bookaar forms part of the internationally recognised Western District Lakes Ramsar site, an important haven for birdlife and native wildlife. Nearby stands the former Bookaar School, which opened in 1908 and served the local community until its closure in 1993.

It's a place where history and nature come together beautifully. Whether you're keen on birdwatching, photography, or simply exploring another corner of Corangamite's rich history, Lake Bookaar is well worth a visit.

Have you visited this hidden gem?
