Great to see some progress with the vegetation trial on the island starting today 🙌👏🌱

This planting is just a trial at this stage and will be located in the vicinity of the now-closed Alfred breakthrough. Fingers crossed these beautiful plants takes hold quickly and there is more to come asap 🤞🤞

⚠️ Remember to take care of our back yard - stay off the rebuilt section of island 🙏 we need to give the dunes and the new vegetation the opportunity to rebuild and grow, and that won’t happen if people walk all over it.

👀 Also, keep an eye on our page in the coming weeks - we’ll be sharing some useful info and educational materials to help our community understand what’s happened, why there is a problem, and what the government is doing about it.

Thanks for the beautiful images as always Bluey's photography

📣📣📣 THE SUNSHINE COAST WATERWAYS AUTHORITY IS NOW LEGISLATED 📣📣📣

✅The Authority will oversee the Sunshine Coast waterways from Pumicestone Passage to the Noosa River and Noosa Lakes. It will formally commence operation on 1 July 2026.
✅ After decades of community advocacy, and neglect by relevant authorities, a dedicated management structure has been established to plan and maintain the health of our waterway.

⚠️See a link to the legislation below
https://www.legislation.qld.gov.au/view/whole/html/bill.first/bill-2025-070

❗️Importantly, the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning, through the Co-ordinator General, will continue to oversee the design and implementation of the long term solution for Bribie, our barrier island and the Pumicestone Passage waterway.

🔑 Key to the success of the SCWA will be:

➡️ the composition of the board in terms of relevant expertise and local knowledge
➡️ the balance between environmental, navigation and economic priorities taken in the work of the authority
➡️ an effective working relationship between the authority and other relevant agencies.

👂Stay tuned for updates.

👷‍♂️The northern tip of Bribie Island has been designated a SPECIAL MANAGEMENT AREA.

📣SUNSHINE COAST WATERWAYS AUTHORITY BILL 2026 COMMITTEE REPORT RELEASED📣

💭The SCWA is a proposed statutory body, responsible for managing the waterways of the Sunshine Coast from Pumicestone Passage to Noosa Lakes. PPCMB have long called for effective management of our waterway.

✍️PPCMB made a significant contribution to the consultation process which informed the Bill. Following the consultation which included 95 written submissions plus face to face committee hearings, the SCWA committee report has been released. The Committee has recommended that the Bill be passed.
See link to the full report in the comments below. ✍️

❓What Happens Next?❓
The Bill will be debated in the Legislative Assembly and if passed, the SCWA could be up and running by July.

👷‍♂️WHERE DOES ALL THIS LEAVE THE WORKS ON BRIBIE ISLAND? 👷🏻‍♀️

✅ The Bill proposes that the SCWA would monitor and maintain the Bribie Island long term works following their delivery by the Office of the Coordinator General. We read that to mean, the work to restore Bribie, will be completed under the direction of the OCG and then handed over to the SCWA. ✅

🍃Currently, we’ve had been excited to see the re-vegetation of the barrier island get underway. Thanks to Bluey for the great photos of the work. 🙏

☑️ Key Considerations for the SCWA
✔️ the need for clarification on the authority’s jurisdiction
✔️ the composition of the SCWA board and governance arrangements
✔️ calls for environmental considerations to be embedded in the legislation.

➡️ FOR THE SAKE OF OUR BARRIER ISLAND and OUR WATERWAY, STAY INFORMED, STAY ENGAGED and STAY TUNED.

🗓️ UPDATE 📣📣 Sunshine Coast Waterways Authority

The lead up to Easter was hectic for our spokesperson Jen KB, the PPCMB and other Sunshine Coast community groups as we engaged further with the SCWA draft bill in:

🗣️ meetings with Mayor Natoli

🤝 partnering with Caloundra Residents Association to host a Bribie Island information session

🎤 attending the public hearing for the inquiry into the SCWA Bill 2026, to speak directly to the committee.

More detail from those events will be coming soon 👍

🍃🍃In the meantime, while we wait for the revegetation of the sand barrier to commence…….

Farewell Arnhem!! Thank you Hall Contracting for doing such a phenomenal job of bolstering our barrier island. And thank you Bluey's photography and Buzz for standing the watch and chronicling this important chapter in Caloundra’s history.
