The CTCU Project team have finalised their design.
Recently, Terry Landsberg revealed that the costs of the project have dramatically increased with one stage costing double the projected amount and the other stage costing around 40% more than first projected. In a cost-of-living crisis with budgets under pressure, we call for an independent review to ensure that the significant expenditure on this project is still warranted.
The stated aim of the project is to reduce traffic congestion on Caloundra Road but the certainty of the project fulfilling this aim is questionable.
The likely outcome of this project will be to concentrate high volumes of traffic into an area dominated by community facilities frequently used by children, families and older people. This design prioritised traffic needs and modelling, forgetting the social context and needs of other users, creating an unsafe outcome for vulnerable groups.
We have been repeatedly told that community consultation has been robust and meaningful, but this has not been our experience.
We respectfully acknowledge that final design of the CTCU has been confirmed with delivery pending a review under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, but it is not too late to re-evaluate this project considering the issues raised above to obtain a liveable, safe outcome that meets the needs and expectations of the community.
