OzFish projects in the Cairns region have been going full throttle these last 12 months – and we know none of this fish habitat restoration work happens without the passion and hard yakka from our local OzFish members.

Do you know someone in the Cairns chapter who has been all effort, and putting fish first?

Now’s the time to call them out (in a good way). Our OzFisher of the Year nominations are OPEN.

This is your chance to recognise the legends who make a real difference to our waterways, whether they’re planting trees, restoring habitat, running events or just always there when it counts.

✔️Any OzFish member can nominate another member
✔️You can nominate across any chapter in Australia
✔️Categories include National, Junior and State/Territory awards
✔️Winners announced on 20 May during National Volunteer Week

If someone deserves a bit of the spotlight, this is it.

👉Nominate here: https://ozfish.org.au/ozfisher-of-the-year/

Nominations close 13 May. Don’t sit on it.

Under blue skies on Sunday morning OzFish Unlimited planted 157 native trees, grasses and mangrove holy along the banks of Lily creek in the heart of Cairns. This is part of a larger project funded by the Australian Government where OzFish Cairns will restore approximately 1.5 km of the riparian zones of Saltwater and Lily creeks. Thank you to our OzFish volunteers, and Wet Tropics Waterways for helping us out with the planting and mulching.

Low quality photos from some high quality mornings spent tackling litter at Lily Creek and Saltwater Creek. 🚮

A huge thank you to the 7 OzFishers who supported us this weekend. We removed a cumulative total of 34.4kg of litter. It’s exciting to see a noticable decrease in litter between visits to these sites.

🐟 These efforts support fish habitat values as part of our ongoing work across the catchment, funded by the Australian Government.

📢 Update - Science in the Pub (Mission Beach)

Due to a last minute change in circumstances, we’ll no longer be presenting at the Shanti Cafe tonight in Mission Beach for CCRC’s Science in the Pub. Please keep an eye on this space for updates as we’ll reschedule for later in the year.

If you’re heading down or in the area, you can still support tonight’s presenter, Patrick Honan, who’ll be speaking about sending spiders into space! 🕷️🚀

Due to a last-minute change, tonight’s scheduled presenter is unfortunately no longer able to attend until later in the year.

Instead, we are excited to have Patrick Honan joining us to talk about sending spiders into space.

If you are curious about how science experiments make their way beyond Earth, this should be a fascinating session.

Due to the heavy rain overnight I am sorry to say that we will have to cancel today's (Sunday 15 March) tree planting at Lily Creek, Cairns. We will reschedule this planting for a later date TBA.

The site has sections of steeply sloping banks that will now be unsafe to work on. The surface water flowing through the planting area is also causing the prepared holes to collapse and fill in.
I (Phil) will be on site from 8:00am to let people know that we will reschedule the event to a later date.

Please accept our apologies.
Phil and Alicia
