💥 FIRST BOWMOUTH GUITARFISH TAGGED IN AUSTRALIA! 💥
We’re excited to finally share some research updates from our December expedition to the far northern in search of bowmouth guitarfish (Rhina ancylostoma), also known as the shark ray — and the search paid off!
After six days, 70+ hours of fishing surveys, and nearly 400 kg of crayfish heads and tails as bait (huge thanks to local crayfishers for sharing your knowledge 🙌), we caught and safely released a 220 cm female Rhina — the first individual ever satellite- and internal-acoustic-tagged in the Southern Hemisphere, and the first caught specifically for research(previous tagged individuals were all fishery bycatch).
She received:
🛰️ A Wildlife Computers satellite (miniPAT) tag
🎯 An Innovasea internal acoustic tag
🧬 Tissue samples for genetic, stable isotope, and physiological analyses
This expedition was funded by and contributes to the Shark Ray 360 initiative — a global effort to inform conservation and recovery plans for this Critically Endangered, top-ranked EDGE species.
Meet the team aboard:
Dr Mark Erdmann ( ), Dr Lisa Hoopes (), Lyle Squire & Tim Bennett (), Laura Simmons, and our Biopixel Oceans crew — trip leader Dr Adam Barnett and research technician Martina Lonati.
This work was made possible by generous grants from the Fat Tire Foundation and Djinda Foundation — huge thanks to our partners, and to the amazing crew from for your support at sea!
