Team represented at in Sri Lanka! 🇱🇰🦈

Dr Christine Dudgeon presented on the genetic considerations for rewilding, using the StAR Project as a case study,
Gigi Mueller presented on the reproductive ecology of reef manta rays along Australia’s east coast with ,
Dr Hugo Lassauce (welcome to our newest team member and absolute weapon!) shared his latest research on multiple paternity in leopard sharks,
And Sasha Faul presented findings from her master’s thesis on baby tiger shark movements 🦈

Huge thanks to for supporting our conference attendance, and to the Sharks International team for hosting an incredible conference - the biggest one yet! 🙌🦈

On the momentous occasion of Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday, I’ve been reflecting on the incredible journey of filming for his iconic series. As a cinematographer, there is no greater honor than hearing Sir David’s voice narrated over your images.
In this video, I share some of my favorite memories from the field—from capturing the first-ever 4K footage of clownfish eggs hatching on the Great Barrier Reef to following in Sir David’s historical footsteps at Raine Island. We’ve pushed the limits of camera technology to document the natural world, all under the guidance of a man who has done more for conservation than perhaps anyone in history.
Thank you, Sir David, for a century of inspiration. Happy Birthday!

Title: The Ultimate Humpback Day Splashdown! 🌊🐋
Happy Humpback Day! 🐋💨
There is nothing quite like the raw power and beauty of a Humpback whale in full breach. Captured from above, this shot shows the incredible scale of these gentle giants as they migrate across our oceans.
Whether they’re breaching to communicate, shake off parasites, or just for the sheer fun of it, it’s a spectacle that never gets old.

The Ultimate Ambush: Wobbegong Shark Strike in 1000 FPS 🦈💥
Ever wondered how a Tasselled Wobbegong earns its reputation as the ocean’s master of disguise? Watch as this "living tapestry" disappears into the seafloor, only to strike with terrifying precision.

Filmed on a Phantom Flex camera at 1000 frames per second, this ultra-slow-motion footage reveals the "suction-feeding" mechanism in action. The shark expands its mouth cavity so rapidly that it creates a vacuum, pulling the unsuspecting fish inside before it even realizes it’s in danger.

In real-time, this happens in the blink of an eye. In slow motion, it’s a masterclass in kinetic grace and predatory efficiency.

Wait for it... 😳 The Spear Mantis Shrimp strikes with the speed of a .22 caliber bullet! 🦐💥

This incredible slow-motion capture (60x slower than real life!) shows the moment a fish is speared by one of nature's most efficient hunters.

Deep in the edit. 🖥️🌊
They say storytelling is defined by what you leave out. For this project, that means sorting through thousands and thousands of hours of raw vision—every single grain of sand and flash of coral—and distilling it all down into just 3 hours of defining narrative.
It’s an immense challenge, but the Great Barrier Reef deserves nothing less than a definitive portrait.

💥 FIRST BOWMOUTH GUITARFISH TAGGED IN AUSTRALIA! 💥

We’re excited to finally share some research updates from our December expedition to the far northern in search of bowmouth guitarfish (Rhina ancylostoma), also known as the shark ray — and the search paid off!

After six days, 70+ hours of fishing surveys, and nearly 400 kg of crayfish heads and tails as bait (huge thanks to local crayfishers for sharing your knowledge 🙌), we caught and safely released a 220 cm female Rhina — the first individual ever satellite- and internal-acoustic-tagged in the Southern Hemisphere, and the first caught specifically for research(previous tagged individuals were all fishery bycatch).

She received:
🛰️ A Wildlife Computers satellite (miniPAT) tag
🎯 An Innovasea internal acoustic tag
🧬 Tissue samples for genetic, stable isotope, and physiological analyses

This expedition was funded by and contributes to the Shark Ray 360 initiative — a global effort to inform conservation and recovery plans for this Critically Endangered, top-ranked EDGE species.

Meet the team aboard:
Dr Mark Erdmann ( ), Dr Lisa Hoopes (), Lyle Squire & Tim Bennett (), Laura Simmons, and our Biopixel Oceans crew — trip leader Dr Adam Barnett and research technician Martina Lonati.

This work was made possible by generous grants from the Fat Tire Foundation and Djinda Foundation — huge thanks to our partners, and to the amazing crew from for your support at sea!

📣 Seen a bowmouth? We’re collecting citizen science sightings! If you’ve seen one, submit it via the form in our bio or drop a comment below.
