Aurukun artist Keith Wikmunea has won the 2023 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award for his sculpture ‘Ku’, Theewith & Kalampang: The White Cockatoo, Galah and the Wandering Dog’. Known as Australia’s richest art award, it was presented last night on Larrakia country (Darwin) by the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory and Telstra. Keith created the carving at Aurukun’s Wik and Kugu Arts Centre which is exhibiting at the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair.

The senior Apalech artist was born in 1967 and raised in Aurukun. Keith says the sculpture represents who he is as a Thu’ Apalech man from Cape York Peninsula. “The colours on this tree are specific to my clan, the Thu’ Apalech people. In Wik Mungkan, my first spoken language, we call this tree yuk thanchal. This tree is also known as milkwood in English and is the same tree that my ancestors have been using since the beginning of time to create their artefacts. My puulwuy (father’s totem) and my kathwuy (mother’s totem) are represented here too.”

My first fashion collection titled
“Bijarril: To Dream” has officially launched under my label Jedindi at the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair 2023.

Tonight the full collection is on the national stage in Darwin for the Country to Couture sponsored by Country Road. So incredibly excited to be amongst some the best in the business of First Nations artists and creators.

To the deadly women who wore my collection out into the world for the first time wore it with such pride and confidence.

This time last year I didn’t have anything only a dream and a goal to create it all within a year and be part of these two main iconic shows in the Indigenous fashion calendar
