Strangulation is serious. Always.

Recent public discussion has brought renewed attention to strangulation in the context of domestic and family violence. It is an opportunity to highlight an important message: the absence of visible injuries does not mean an act of violence was harmless.

Non-fatal strangulation is a serious form of violence that can cause life-threatening internal injuries, even when there are no obvious external marks.

It must never be minimised, dismissed or normalised.

Domestic and family violence is not always visible to others. Recognising the warning signs, taking disclosures seriously and knowing how to respond can make a difference.

At Zonta Club of Cairns, we believe that every woman and girl deserves to live free from violence, intimidation and fear.

We all have a role to play in building a community where women are safe, believed and supported.

It’s been a busy weekend for our little club with members out and about at STEM Changemakers at James Cook University and WOW Australia at Bulmba-ja Arts Centre.

Our president Karen and new member Cindy Wider were out supporting young women to expand their experiences of STEM industries.

In town at Bulmba-Ja we joined like minded women in our community and visitors across a range of activities including Cranky Women’s Comedy Show, an evening with Dame Quentin Bryce, workshops and the Comedy Gala.

session discussing our theme of From
Local Women to Lasting Change.

In my 55 years, I’ve never felt such fear for women and girls as I do right now.
In the past week:
* A man allegedly murdered a woman in Queensland;
* There were two gang r**es of girls in Sydney, allegedly perpetrated by boys from private schools;
* A Sydney Swans player is at the centre of investigations into the s*xual assault of a woman in Melbourne;
* Two Perth men claimed their attack on a 14-year-old girl in Perth was consensual s*x;
* Australian women do not want to be MPs because of threats of violence; and
* A study found 33% of boys believe gender equality has gone too far.
The reality is men harming women is not unusual. Indeed, it is very much normal.
As I write, we have lost more than 45 women & girls to male violence this year.
The three s*xual violence cases in the headlines right now are only the tip of the iceberg - there are many thousands of acts of s*xual violence happening everyday across the country. These are crimes that will never make the media.
And the appalling attitudes of boys is being fueled by the manosphere, social media pages spreading disinformation and the proliferation of AI content that’s designed to warp how humans think.
We are watching s*xism and misogyny flood our feeds as men - and many women - slt shame and victim-blame the woman who was allegedly violated by a Sydney Swans player in Melbourne early on Monday.
Being a woman in the public space is also becoming harder, with many talented and intelligent queens turning away from careers in politics because they know they will endure s*xism and threats of r**e and other physical harm simply for simply existing and wanting change.
If you haven’t checked it out, I recommend you read the results from the University of Melbourne’s recent survey of young people. It shows how hostile attitudes towards women and girls are festering in young males and leading to acts of extremism.
Misogyny and violence are our new normal.

Our club is proud to be supporting STEM Changemakers at JCU again this year, helping them lead the empowerment of underrepresented girls in North Queensland.

Over six weeks STEM Changemakers are delivering an inspiring experience where girls connect with real STEM experts, explore exciting ideas, and build confidence for the future.

Aiming to change regional Queensland's STEM workforce capability and potential through connecting regional communities and growing collaboration, by transforming girls’ aspirations and their family supporters’ perspectives.

Wow what an amazing incredible event. On Saturday 25th July our Club held our annual Amelia Earhart High Tea. Celebrating Young women in aviation. These events couldn’t be possible without our support of the cairns community. Our beautiful group of Zonta volunteers. Alana McKenna, Amy Stewart, Brodie Alder for the in-site into your careers.
