We are excited to announce a world first, and major conservation success! An endangered Palm cockatoo has successfully nested in an artificial hollow!
People For WIldlife, Traditional Owners & Palm cockatoo expert Dr Christina Christina N. Zdenek have made and installed 29 artificial hollows in northern Cape York to help address the loss of critical nesting habitat for this endangered species.
Just 1 month after we erected this artificial log hollow, a pair laid an egg inside (on the nesting platform we made for them). Such a rapid uptake of this nesting resource provides further evidence that there is a desperate need for large nesting hollows in the region. Dr Zdenek has confirmed that the bird on the right in the first image is the fledgling, and the bird on the left is the father.
Using wildlife-friendly remote cameras, we collected almost 8000 images between September and December 2025. These images revealed the adult birds exploring, entering, and guarding the hollow, providing crucial confirmation of nesting by this secretive species. Then, one of our team members secured a single high-resolution image of the chick on top of the hollow on its last day there before fledging. Hard work paying off!
The Palm Cockatoo Breeding Habitat Restoration Project is supported by Louis Vuitton, the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation, the Australian Geographic Society, the North Queensland Wildlife Trust, Birds Queensland and our public supporters.
