KKCC-TV Daily Editorial Series
Day 1:
Education as the Key to Dignity and Sustainable Empowerment for the Khmer-Krom People
As the Khmer New Year approaches, while Khmer-Krom communities worldwide prepare for celebration, we must also remember the painful chapter of history affecting our Khmer-Krom brothers and sisters. The 1949 transfer of Kampuchea-Krom to Emperor Bao Dai’s administration created a prolonged injustice. Seventy-seven years later (1949-2026), many Khmer-Krom continue to face limitations in fully exercising fundamental freedoms.
Among the most critical concerns is education. Access to education in one’s mother tongue, the ability to study authentic history, and the right to preserve cultural identity are foundational elements of human dignity.
Education as a Pathway to Empowerment
Education is not political instrument; it is the foundation of human development. An educated individual develops critical thinking, understands rights and responsibilities, and gains the capacity to improve personal and community wellbeing.
The Buddha taught “wisdom is the highest treasure” (Paññā Paramaṃ Dhanaṃ). Material wealth may be lost, but knowledge cannot be confiscated. In environments where political space may feel contained, inner development through learning becomes a secure and sustainable strategy.
The teachings on patience (Khanti) and perseverance (Viriya) remind us that progress often requires steady effort over generations. Communities that invest in education cultivate long-term resilience.
Lessons from Other Nations – With Realistic Understanding
Country such as South Korea, Singapore, and Finland have strengthened themselves through major investments in education. However, their sovereign autonomy differs significantly from the Khmer-Krom situation. Direct comparison would be neither accurate nor fair.
Yet history also demonstrates that minority communities living within complex political systems have gradually strengthened their social standing through education, professional development, and constructive civic engagement. Education should not be viewed as confrontation, but as preparation.
For the Khmer-Krom community, education contributes to:
• Personal socio-economic mobility
• Development of professionals who serve the community
• Preservation of language, culture, and Buddhism
• Responsible participation within existing legal frameworks
Education builds inner freedom – freedom of thought, discipline, and confidence.
Khmer-Krom Women and CEDAW
Khmer-Krom women face distinct social and economic challenges. The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) affirms equal rights for women in education and development. Education women strengthen families, communities, and future generations.
International Legal Framework
The right to education is protected under international law, including:
-Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)
-The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)
-The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR)
This right includes education that respects cultural identity and mother tongue.
Conclusion
Education is a long-term strategy for survival, dignity, and constructive empowerment. It is not a slogan, but a light of wisdom. When external conditions are limited, internal development through knowledge becomes an enduring source of strength.
Through patience, wisdom, and perseverance, the Khmer-Krom people can continue to nurture their identity and prepare future generations for a more dignified and hopeful tomorrow.
