It’s time for us to say goodbye from Fire to Flourish East Gippsland!

Fire to Flourish was designed as a five-year pilot program in response to the 2019/20 bushfires, to demonstrate that community leadership and grassroots action can meaningfully strengthen local resilience. The end of 2025 marks the end of this pilot.

Since those fires, Fire to Flourish East Gippsland has supported local leadership, strengthened community resilience and helped bring your incredible community-led ideas to life. As the program reaches its planned conclusion at the end of this year, we pause to celebrate everything we have achieved together.

Alongside our communities, we delivered 33 projects totalling $1.8million, each shaped by the people who call East Gippsland home. From strengthening cultural knowledge and environmental stewardship, to building practical skills, infrastructure projects and uplifting community connection, these projects reflect the creativity, determination and care of our local communities. To every community member, partner and organisation who walked alongside us, thank you.

Fire to Flourish brought with it new ways of working, grounded in co-design, reflection and shared decision-making. We recognise the trust, courage and open-mindedness it took to engage with an approach that was sometimes unfamiliar. Your willingness to sit at the table, share your insights, and co-create solutions made this program what it is. We are deeply grateful for the generosity and leadership shown across the region.

Thank you and goodbye!

🌿 Wilderness Coast Kelp Farm Scoping Study 🌿

We’re exploring the potential for a community-owned kelp farming initiative along the Wilderness Coast - one that creates local jobs, supports the environment, and strengthens our coastal communities.

Our work builds on two key documents:
💚 The Australian Seaweed Industry Blueprint (Kelly, 2020) – outlining the opportunities and challenges in seaweed aquaculture for regional Australian Seaweed Industry https://www.australianseaweedinstitute.com.au/
💚 Assessing the Potential for Seaweed Aquaculture in Gippsland (Bursic et al., 2022) - highlighting Gippsland’s unique potential Gippsland Seaweed Aquaculture Study https://www.bluecarbonlab.org/

We’re taking it a step further by focusing on a community ownership/social enterprise model that returns real benefits to locals. We want your input!
