The Tuart Forest, once rich in native plants and wildlife, is now under threat from the unchecked spread of Arum Lily. Introduced to WA as a garden plant in the 1800s, this declared pest has become a serious ecological problem, forming dense monocultures that displace native wildflowers, grasses, animals and birds.
Arum Lily also consumes large amounts of soil moisture, depriving native plants and regenerating tuart trees of vital water. Despite its pest status under Western Australian biosecurity laws, it continues to spread with limited action from government agencies and landowners.
CWA Busselton Branch in support of the Ludlow Tuart Forest Restoration Group’s work, call for government to prioritise Arum Lily removal, fund effective control measures, enforce policy, and back community-led restoration in the Ludlow State Forest and nearby public lands. Local efforts show control is possible, but they need recognition, support, funding and public awareness.
