I picked up a camera first in rooms with almost no light, holding women through birth as their doula.

I learned to capture in low light, so I could hand a woman back a memory of herself at her most raw and primal.

Birthwork connected me to the power of photography. But my desire to mother on my own terms paved the way to the life I’ve created for us now.

I knew the kind of mother I wanted to be. Before I knew his name. Before I knew if a soul would ever land in my womb.

As I hoped and prayed, I chipped away, invested time and money, I practiced, failed, and continued to pray for my baby to come.

And when his soul finally arrived to me, he arrived into a life I’d already built for him.

You don’t have to become someone else to be worthy of art.

The real work is in being witnessed, in a shoot that is entirely about you experiencing how much space there really is for you to take up in this life.

The most common thing women tell me is about their body. They want to wait until they’re a certain weight, until their arms or belly look different. Those are the stories that keep us small.

My invitation to you: hold yourself exactly as you are right now. That woman is more worthy than you realise, to be seen as she is. That woman is ready to create something epic.

We talk about embodiment like it’s a feeling. It’s actually a relationship.

I learned that the hard way, in one of the hardest heartbreaks of my life, I was also staring down the barrel of starting my somatic educator training for women.

That training shifted how I live in my body. Monumentally! It changed how I experience the full spectrum of my felt human experience, not just the parts that are easy to sit with. It gave me language to articulate what was actually happening in me, and tools to meet myself with.

I moved from a woman in anxiety, depression, stagnancy into a woman who lives in the fullness of herself. I still have bad days but I now have the ability and capacity and spaciousness to do what I need to do to move it through me.

That’s what somatic communion actually is. Not a feeling you chase. A relationship you build, especially in the seasons that ask the most of you.
