Read on to find out more about joining us in underground Australia! The Sydney Speleological Society is one of Australia’s leading caving groups and actively encourages public interest and involvement in our activities. Established in 1954 as only the second constitutionally founded Speleological Society in NSW (the third in Australia), the SSS boasts a lengthy history of cave exploration and spel
eo-affiliated activities, including biospeleology, geology, mineralogy, photography, speleo-literature, cave rescue, speleo-sport, conservation, SRT, palaeontology, surveying and more. In over 60 years of existence, the SSS has played a significant role in pioneering the world of caving in Australia and beyond, with members (some boasting experience in excess of 50 years!) credited with the discovery, survey and repair of caves and the invention and manufacture of caving equipment used to this day. Other contributions of note include our consultation on cave conservation issues and our involvement in the development of caving standards, cave rescue, the formation of The Australian Speleological Federation, and cave documentation. In fact, to this day we remain the largest publisher of Australian Caving Literature and continue to rank well internationally in this field. Our members benefit from regular organised trips to various caving systems in NSW, including Jenolan, Bungonia, Wombeyan, Walli and Yarrangobilly, with interstate and international trips also on the agenda. In addition, there are regular social events for members and any interested members of the public (primarily based in Sydney’s Inner West), including monthly talk nights, general meetings where attendees are encouraged to share trip reports and photos, and annual dinners and barbeques. We cater to all levels of experience and interest facets so why not take a moment to get a feel for the club by checking out our members’ truly spectacular photos and videos of their regular adventures underground or share your own stories, photos or questions by posting on our wall.
