Lisa Fahey Foundation

Since 2005, the Foundation has provided financial support to families, covering essential costs so that parents & carers can focus on their health & family rather than mounting financial pressures. Lisa Fahey Foundation takes care of day-to-day cash-flow problems (pays utility bills, installs hot water systems and more), where families can't make ends meet while a primary carer receives cancer tre

atment. Currently, cases are submitted to the board through RAH and FMC social workers and those meeting the criteria receive action within 24 hours from the initial request. At just 41 years, on Remembrance Day 11 November 2003, Lisa Fahey was taken, tragically and prematurely, from her husband Steve and young children Amelia and Patrick, her parents, grandma and the hundreds of other people who loved her too. The Lisa Fahey Foundation was established to raise funds with which it commemorates Lisa’s name through acts of charity, especially towards families with a member who has cancer. Lisa and her family learned a great deal about the difficulties and challenges of living with cancer and we believe she smiles on our efforts to extend assistance, support and kindness to other families who find themselves in the same situation.

This week is National Volunteer Week and the theme is 'Your Year to Volunteer'.

At the Lisa Fahey Foundation, our work is only possible thanks to the generosity of people who give their time to help others - including our volunteer Board, who dedicate their time and expertise to supporting families facing cancer.

As we continue to grow, we would love to build a community of volunteers who can help across different areas of the Foundation - whether that’s assisting at upcoming events and functions, helping with fundraising initiatives, lending a hand behind the scenes, or simply joining our volunteer contact list for future opportunities.

If you would like to get involved and support the work we do, please email us at [email protected]

Or pop in a comment below and we will be in touch.

In further Board News, we are pleased to welcome another new Board Member, Georgia Naylon.

Georgia is currently General Manager, Transformation at Lutheran Homes Group, where she leads a significant portfolio of organisation-wide initiatives and works closely with executive leadership and boards.

With a background in transformation, strategy, and leading large-scale organisational change within the aged care and community sector, I am passionate about building strong foundations that genuinely improve people’s experiences and outcomes. I look forward to bringing a combination of strategic thinking and governance to support the Foundation’s continued growth and future direction.”

We are excited to officially welcome Amelia Fahey to the Board.

As Lisa Fahey’s daughter, Amelia has been closely involved with board initiatives for many years, particularly over the last five years, and we are thrilled to have her formally join the team.Amelia is looking forward to supporting the Board through governance, risk management, grant development and submissions, as well as representing the Board externally through community engagement opportunities.

She is passionate about helping the Board continue to support those in need, while also expanding fundraising opportunities to strengthen our ability to help others — especially during ongoing cost of living challenges.

Please join us in welcoming Amelia to the Board!

This coming Mother’s Day, we wanted to acknowledge the bravery of the many mums we support through the Lisa Fahey Foundation.

For many of these women, cancer reshapes daily life in profound ways - as they go through treatment and sit with the uncertainty it brings, while still trying to show up for their children in the ways that matter most.

At the same time, they are carrying the financial strain that often comes with time away from work and the rising cost of care.

For these mums, and for all mums -we’re thinking of you. And to those who are missing their mums, or find this day difficult as they navigate becoming a mother or longing for it, we hold you in our thoughts.

On April 1st, 2003, Lisa began her courageous journey with cancer. Though she did not win her fight, her strength, spirit, and resilience continue to inspire us every day.

Her legacy lives on through the Lisa Fahey Foundation, helping to ease the financial burden faced by cancer patients and their families, and leaving a positive, lasting mark on the world through hope, compassion, and meaningful change.

‘Financial toxicity’ is the distress or hardship arising from the financial burden of cancer treatment - and it’s increasingly recognised as a side effect of cancer care.

But unlike nausea or fatigue, this side effect is often invisible.
It can mean choosing between treatment and everyday essentials.

For many families, a cancer diagnosis doesn’t just affect health - it reduces income, increases expenses, and places real pressure on the ability to keep up with basic living costs.

The Lisa Fahey Foundation plays a small role in helping to ease this burden - providing fast, practical financial relief to families with a parent undergoing cancer treatment. From covering essential bills like electricity, water and car rego, our work helps address the everyday realities of financial toxicity.

Because no one should have to choose between treatment and keeping the lights on.

Today we’re sharing the story of a family we recently supported.
Emma* is the mother of two children, aged 7 and 11, and was undergoing treatment for bowel cancer. After surgery and chemotherapy, she was referred to palliative care. She had accessed income protection and some superannuation, but those funds had run out. After weeks in hospital, her priority was to spend as much time as possible at home with her children.

The Lisa Fahey Foundation assisted with the cost of a hospital bed and mattress so she could be cared for at home.

This is the practical support your donations provide - helping South Australian families stay together during incredibly difficult times, and for that we say thanks.

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the women at the heart of the Lisa Fahey Foundation.

We honour Lisa Fahey, whose strength and compassion continue to guide our work more than 20 years on. Her legacy reflects the spirit of this year’s theme, Give To Gain - the idea that through giving, we all grow stronger.

We acknowledge the women on our Board, our dedicated volunteers, our social workers, and the women and families we support every day. Your leadership, care and resilience make a lasting difference.

If you would like to donate in honour of this day, please do so at https://lisafahey.org.au/donate/

Thank you to the Campbelltown Rotary Club for their generous support of the Lisa Fahey Foundation.

Recently, Amelia Fahey presented to the Club, sharing more about our work and the families we support. The presentation was extremely well received and resulted in a generous $1,000 donation to our organisation.

We’re also grateful for the Club’s offer to actively promote us to other Rotary clubs and encourage further presentation opportunities. Support like this helps us continue making a meaningful difference.

Thank you for your partnership and community spirit.

It’s been a while since we last posted here at the Lisa Fahey Foundation.

While we’ve been quiet online over this period, we’ve been busy behind the scenes - planning, building partnerships, and preparing the next phase of our work.

There’s more to share soon, so watch this space for updates.
