Recently we had the privilege of welcoming Nigel Tapp - Community Relations Lead North West from the Clifford Craig Health Foundation to the Rotary Club of Somerset dinner meeting at Burnie Bowls Club and honestly? He left us feeling hopeful and inspired.
His core message stuck with us:
👉 The level of health you get should not depend on where you live.
And right here on Tasmania’s North-West Coast, that future is being built – not by big city institutions, but by local people, local researchers, and local supporters like you.
Did you know?
For every $1 invested in medical research, **$4 comes back to our community** – in better care, better outcomes, and real hope for families facing tough diagnoses.
What’s happening locally?
🏥 A new Burnie Health Hub (at the old Uni site on Mooreville Road).
🧠 An Innovation Centre – 8 years in the making with State and Federal support.
📚 A 3-year plan with the NWRH focused on research, skill development & training.
🎓 Programs to help local medical students and professionals train and stay here in North West Tasmania.
Ground-breaking research already underway (right here, for us):
· Dr. Giuliana Murfet – Digital diabetes triage system for hospitals.
· Dr. Lauren Akesson – Cancer genetic testing for rural families.
· Assoc. Prof. Herrick Webber – Asthma management in schools.
· Plus research into: maternal health, stroke care, lung disease, mRNA therapies, orthopaedic safety, and more.
Community connection matters
They’re also running public medical talks through their “Let’s Talk Health” series – short, no-nonsense, and for all of us.
And yes – he asked the big question:
“How can Rotary Club of Somerset help?”
We’re already looking at ways we can support in 2026–27 events, fundraising, volunteering. Whatever it takes to back work this important.
Thank you, Nigel for a night that was equal parts eye-opening and heartwarming. You reminded us that talent + kindness can change a whole community. ❤️
