Benefits of an energy mix.

Why is it good to have different types of energy in Tasmania?

An energy mix helps manage the rising cost of energy. Combining different energy sources increases our resilience and prepares us for any challenges ahead.

When it’s sunny or windy, we use cheap solar and wind power.

When it’s not, we use hydropower to keep the power on.

Getting the right mix (Part 2).

Dispatchable energy is higher-cost energy sources, like gas, hydro power, pumped hydro and battery storage.

This is energy we can control and use whenever we need it. Battery storage and hydropower are reliable because we can turn them on or off, even if the weather isn’t right for solar or wind.

Getting the right mix (Part 1).

Tasmania must get the right mix to meet our community’s needs and help manage and minimise the increasing costs.

Variable energy is a low-cost energy source, like wind and solar power.
Solar power works when it's sunny, and wind power works when it's windy; that's why it's called "variable".

In Tasmania, we use more energy than we make.

⛽ Most of Tasmania's energy - 58% - comes from petrol and diesel for transport, and coal and gas for heavy industry and businesses.

Only 42% of Tasmania’s total energy consumption comes from renewable sources.

🚩 We are facing an energy crisis.

There is an urgent need to upgrade aging infrastructure and prepare for the future.

🌿 Investment is required for Tasmania to maintain its status as a renewable energy leader.

Tasmania's Renewable Legacy 💡

For more than a century, renewable energy has been powering Tasmania.

🌧️ Our reliable rainfall, rugged terrain, and numerous rivers made it an ideal location for hydropower generation.

💦 Tasmania's first major hydroelectric project started operating in 1916, marking the shift from coal and steam to renewable hydropower.

💨 Tasmania has had wind power since 1998, and the first large-scale solar farm was approved in 2023.

☀️ Today, Tasmania continues to lead in renewable energy, with hydropower at its core and new wind and solar projects driving a sustainable future.

HIF Community Drop-in sessions 🗣️

HIF Asia Pacific is proposing to build and operate an e-Fuel plant on the former Pulp Mill site in South Burnie. e-Fuels are made by combining hydrogen with recycled carbon dioxide. They are a direct replacement for the fuels already used in cars, trucks, aircrafts and ships.

Find out more at one of the following sessions:

📅 Wednesday 22 October, 3pm - 7pm
📍 South Burnie Football Club, Wivenhoe Recreation Ground

📅 Thursday 23 October, 3pm - 6pm

We have selected a joint venture of DT Infrastructure and Samsung C&T Corporation (TasVic Greenlink) as the preferred bidder in Marinus Link's major civils and construction tender.

The ‘balance of works’ contract is the final of three major contracts, and the selection of the preferred bidder marks a significant next step towards constructing this landmark renewable energy infrastructure project.

The contract, currently in final negotiations with TasVic Greenlink, will cover the construction of converter stations in Heybridge and Hazelwood, the installation of equipment and the land cable civil works, which spans 90km across Gippsland.

The announcement signals significant opportunities for local businesses in Tasmania and Victoria.

Positive news for Project Marinus ⚡

🌊 A Final Investment Decision (FID) for Stage 1 of Project Marinus, comprising Marinus Link and the North West Transmission Developments (NWTD) has been approved by all three shareholders: the Tasmanian and Victorian governments, along with the federal government.

🌿 In addition, after four years of rigorous environmental assessments, including extensive investigations, surveys, and public consultation, Commonwealth environmental approval has been obtained for the proposed undersea and underground electricity and data interconnector between north west Tasmania and the Latrobe Valley in Victoria.
