Next Field Outing Sunday 16th August , Leven Canyon
Travelling in private cars with car-pooling available at departure points.
Note early departure times 8.30 from Wynyard junction of Bass Hwy and York St ; 8.45 from
Somerset old railway platform area on Bass Hwy opposite blocked off end of Elizabeth St; 9.00
am from Burnie Yacht Club car park, The Esplanade South Burnie; 9.15 from Ulverstone at Lovett
Street underpass. Plan is to arrive at Leven Canyon Reserve approx. 10 am. A quick morning tea/
toilet break, then a choice of 2 walks before lunch - Lorraine will lead the easier walk to
Cruikshanks lookout. This is a well-maintained and mostly level track with seats to rest along the
way to a sweeping view of the canyon and the river 275m below the lookout. Caroline will lead the
alternative walk to the canyon floor footbridge to view the river much closer. This is a short but
steeper walk with quite a few steps and handrails near the bottom. On both walks we will go very
steady to enjoy the forest, look for fungi, seasonal wildflowers (maybe orchids?) birds and other
wildlife as we usually do. However, the canyon floor walk is suited more to those of us who want a
bit of a physical challenge and to expend some energy before lunch! The sign says it is unsuitable
for people who are not medically fit. After lunch, we plan to do the 1.2 km circuit track. Those who
did the canyon floor walk may choose to head to Cruikshanks lookout and then down steps (693?
steps) and eventually the track leads back to the main picnic area. Those who do not want to go
down the steps can start this circuit walk from the main picnic area and turn back along the same
route whenever they feel ready. Wear sturdy walking shoes, dress warmly – hat and gloves
recommended as everywhere on this outing will be shady. Bring wet weather clothing, field
guides, binoculars, lunch, drinks, snacks. More info below (“Seen at Leven Canyon on July 16th).
