Automation tools and generative AI platforms are threatening the very tasks many admin staff, including our union members, perform. According to a study by Oxford, we even can predict when AI will be fully able to take over specific kinds of jobs. Katja Grace's team at the University of Oxfordâs Future of Humanity Institute contacted 1634 leading AI academics and industry experts from around the world to ask them when they thought intelligent machines would outperform humans at a variety of tasks and occupations, and when they would be superior at all tasks. A total of 352 experts responded, and the researchers calculated median dates based on their predictions. In the next decade, they expect AI to outperform humans in tasks such as translating languages (which they have already done), writing high-school essays (which is now an epidemic on college campuses) and driving a truck (already in development.)
Without strong contract language, union protections may be weaker for âadmin supportâ categories, especially when companies redefine roles as âcoordinatorsâ or âgigâ workers and introduce abased monitoring or task elimination. Thatâs why as a union, we have bargained for, and won strong AI language into our agreements including definitions, limitations, and displacement pay.
If youâre unionized (or trying to be), demand that your contract include clear language about how AI or automation tools will impact your role: job security guarantees, notice of task changes, retraining, severance if elimination. Admin workers; youâre part of the creative ecosystem. Your role matters.
AI is no longer scifi. Itâs entering scheduling tools, and, production workflows. Understand how your tasks might change and negotiate protections now.
The policy environment matters. Push for legislation that updates worker protections in the age of AI, support pro-union legislation to win back rights stripped away. If you want to be more involved, or have question, defiantly dm us! Do your best to enjoy union made candy, and be in solidarity with other poor and working class people this Halloween.
