An update from Nepal!
Two beautiful baby hammocks and scales were lovingly sewn and donated by the wonderful Marijke, a South Australian private-practising homebirth midwife with over 30 years of experience.
When Marijke heard about the opportunity to support a fellow midwife, she didn’t hesitate. 💛
AAA Board Member Catherine was then able to personally deliver the hammocks and scales to Sangita, a dedicated midwife at the Ngadi Health Post in Nepal. These much-needed resources will assist Sangita in conducting health checks for the beautiful babies and families in her care.
Many of the mothers and babies Sangita supports live in extremely remote locations, with some requiring her to travel for hours to reach them.
This is what community, connection and support look like.

Like many throughout the world our Aussie Action Action Abroad community are shocked to see and read of the devastation of the river flooding in the Rasuwa area of Nepal.
Our thoughts and prayers are will communities that have been impacted, lost lives and infrastructure.
As a humanitarian charity with 25 years of experience in supporting Nepal communities, we aim to raise funds, resources and people power to assist where we can.

Calling for expressions of interest - Nepal Health Support Team.

We are inviting those who work in health, currently studying a health field and like to share your experience and knowledge, to consider being part of a VIRTUAL Health Team working party.

We realise that there are many people are not currently able to travel with us to Nepal, but who would love to be involved in some way. You can be involved from Australia!
We are calling for interested Australian health professionals and students to indicate their interest and when you can - join a zoom chat to learn about AAA and our Nepali partners and projects, Women2Women and how you can be involved from both Australia and in Nepal.

Are you someone who wants to take on a new challenge?

Now is the time to register your interest in our Community Action Team heading to Nepal on the 28th Dec this year.
There is a place for you to come, engage, share your skills and embrace the unique characteristics of remote Nepal.

From Kathmandu to a remote small village community in the foothills of the Annapurnas, you will have the opportunity to support schools, community groups and project partners. An exciting opportunity exists for those who wish to get out of their comfort zone and undertake projects that will make a real difference.

At the end of this month Board member Catherine Barnes will spend a solid week of meetings in Nepal.

In preparation for our end of year group and future activities, she will be spending time in Kathmandu and Lamjung district, meeting partners, colleagues and long time friends.
The planning is essential as we ensure our teams support our Nepali colleagues in their delivery of education, health or community focussed projects. This planning trip will open the doors for participants to become active contributors.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST: Health Team to Nepal 2027

We are inviting those who work in health, currently studying a health field and like to travel, to consider coming to Nepal next year.

Following a successful series of meetings in January of this year with health providers and professionals, local community groups, mother’s groups and local government organisations, Aussie Action Abroad is seeking volunteers to join us in 2027.

Expanding our existing programs in the disability, aging and health sector, we are focused on developing our new Women2Women program. This is based on collaborative conversations regarding women’s health, fertility, pregnancy, birth and postpartum care. These discussions have helped identify key areas for health professional skill development and community capacity building and as a result, opportunities for Australian health workers to take part in experiences in Nepalese hospitals, health posts and remote communities.

Planning is now underway for our next Health focused expedition in May 2027. If you are a student, midwife, paediatrician, nurse, obstetrician, or work in allied health, we’d love you to come to Nepal to share your expertise, learn from Nepali people and professionals, and contribute to some incredible experiences where you will gain as much as you give.

Meet Sonja !

For more than two decades, Sonja has been part of the Aussie Action Abroad family. She first joined us in Nepal in 2003 as a group leader, returned in 2025 with her daughter to experience the beauty and culture of Nepal together, and more recently spent time reconnecting with health posts and hospitals in some of Nepal's most remote communities.

As a highly respected health professional specialising in women's health and childbirth, Sonja is passionate about supporting local health workers and strengthening healthcare in remote Nepali communities. Through the relationships she has built over many years, she is helping develop opportunities for our volunteer Health Team to work alongside local health professionals, sharing knowledge, skills and practical experience.
One area of particular focus is our growing Women2Women initiative, supporting holistic care for women through collaboration, education and shared learning with local health workers.

For Sonja, the most rewarding part of volunteering is working alongside dedicated local professionals, learning from one another, building lasting friendships, and knowing that even small acts of support can create lasting change.

Although Sonja volunteers her time and expertise, she'll tell you that when you're using your skills to improve the lives of others, it never really feels like work.

We sincerely thank Sonja for her leadership, vision and commitment to improving health outcomes in Nepal. Her passion continues to inspire others to share their knowledge and skills through Aussie Action Abroad.

Meet Catherine! A Volunteer Making a Real Difference.

For the past few years, Catherine has generously volunteered her time and expertise to lead our Education Team, and we're delighted she'll be returning to lead again on our December/January expedition.
As an experienced educator, Catherine works alongside school communities to develop practical resources, share ideas, build on existing strengths, and create action plans that help local schools continue providing quality education for their students.
Rather than arriving with all the answers, our Education Team believes in working with local teachers; listening, learning and sharing ideas together. It's this spirit of partnership that creates lasting relationships and meaningful outcomes for everyone involved.
Reflecting on her time in the villages, Catherine says:
"Every visit reminds me why education matters. Working alongside such passionate teachers, sharing ideas, learning from one another, and seeing the difference we can make together is an experience that stays with you long after you return home."
People often thank Catherine for the incredible work she does, but she'd be the first to say that when you're doing something you love and making a genuine difference, it never really feels like work.
We are incredibly grateful for Catherine's leadership, dedication, generosity, and the example she sets for others.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST - TREK: MUSTANG, NEPAL

We have had a number of inquiries regarding a trip to the upper Mustang area in Nepal next year. Late May 2027 is looking to be the best time with local festivals and celebrations.

The Upper Mustang trek starts from Jomsom to Kagbeni, the entry point of upper Mustang Region. Then following the banks of Kaligandaki River upstream to get to Lo—Mangthang, the capital of the upper Mustang.
The trek starts from world’s deepest gorge Kaligandaki Region into world‘s highest regions of Lo-Mangthang Valley that passes through an almost treeless barren landscape, a steep rocky trail up and down hill and panoramic views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and several other peaks.

SOME NEWS FROM US: Brigitte Muir's partnership with AAA.

We are excited to announce that Brigitte Muir OAM has now partnered with AAA to lead Trekking and Mindful Groups starting on the 7th Nov this year.
Brigitte was the first Australian woman to summit Everest in 1997 and since developing close connections, she has maintained regular contact with Nepali communities and supported village projects.

We look forward to following the group as they trek into the Tsum Valley and under the guidance of Brigitte and Dawa Che, Qigong and Taichi teacher. Both live in Natimuk, at the foot of Mount Arapiles/Djurid.
