ANZAC Day in Bungendore Delivers Strong Support for Legacy

ANZAC Day in Bungendore once again demonstrated the strength of community spirit, with a fantastic fundraising effort in support of Legacy.
The Rotary Club of Bungendore, the Mudchooks Rugby Union Club, the Royal Hotel and the Lake George Hotel all came together to make the day a success. The Mudchooks kept the crowd entertained by running the two-up ring, while Rotary volunteers were busy at both pubs collecting donations for Legacy. Thanks to the generosity of the Bungendore community, the Rotary Legacy buckets returned $2,000 on the day alone. This was further boosted by a contribution from the Royal Hotel and Lake George Hotel, bringing the total to an impressive $3,000.
The accompanying photo captures representatives from Rotary, the Mudchooks and the Royal Hotel presenting a Community Bank cheque to Suzanne McInnes of Queanbeyan Legacy.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved—your support truly makes a difference and helps change lives.

Memories come flooding back!

Last week we welcomed Benjamin and Carole Van Eldik from Toys of Yesteryear and their business partner Margaret Hadfield from the Artist Shed Fyshwick and co-owner of artist's Shed Nostalgia Bungendore as guest speakers to our club meeting.

Benjamin has 2 shops on Gibraltar St in Bungendore that he shares with Margaret having toys and art in the shops. He said that they like creating an atmosphere in the shop that gives each shopper an experience with lots of memories being brought back to visitors as they come across toys that they would have played with when they were younger.

Seeing the Thunderbirds secret island headquarters almost complete with familiar characters like Alan, Virgil, Brains and Lady Penelope and the famous Thunderbird vehicles is impressive.

As a result there is no online shop, it's an instore experience., and that is what they wanted to create.

Benjamin often has lucky dips for children to add to the experience.
He also likes the children, young and old, to physically play with the toys while in the shop, adding again to the experience they have created.

Margaret won the inaugural Gallipoli Anzac Art prize in 2006
She is a painter and art teacher - teaching beginners right through to teachers. Margaret paints local scenery and sells the paintings at the shop in Bungendore as well as The Artist Shed in Fyshwick.

Carole, Benjiman's wife said that he had to open a shop as she needed to get all the items he was collecting out of every room in their house.

Guest speakers are the best
3 generations of the same family have visited our club over the last couple of months to share their lives and adventures.
First it was Nicola Hinder, then daughter Emily Hinder and now mum Beryl Tarttelin. Beryl is a previous President of our Rotary Club and has been involved in community service for pretty much all her life. A teacher by trade she has taught overseas and told us of her teaching in India where the children really put the effort into their schooling because, back then, if they finished school they got a job with the government. That of course meant they earned money! Incentives are a good learning tool it appears. Beryl has also been instrumental in getting the Chair Yoga group up and going in Bungendore and has been involved in the Bungendore Seniors Group since its very beginning.
Thanks for sharing your interesting life story to date Beryl and we look forward to hearing from you again.

* If you could invent anything, what would it be and how would it help in your day to day activities?
* If you could meet anyone in history, who would it be and what would you talk to them about?
The Senior Section Years 5-6 chose from:
* If you could time travel to any event in history, where would you go and what would you do?
* Should we ban plastic bottles and bags completely? Why? Why not? What would replace them and what if any would be the implications of this?

Joining together
There were about 35 or more of us at our combined meeting last night when members of the Rotary Club of Queanbeyan made the trek to Bungendore for our weekly meeting. We shared information on what each club is doing and had some great dinner conversations.
To add to that our Honorary member Mark Webster shared his journey and passion for Dragon Boat racing which has taken him around the country and as a member of the Australian National Dragon Boat Team, the Auroras, across the world competing as an elite competitor. Well done Mark.
