As young Hellenes in the diaspora we want to ensure that our connection to our culture, traditions, history and language never fades. We are a not-for profit, student run, university society that holds various and multiple events throughout the year to give other Greeks and philhellenes the opportunity to immerse themselves in our culture. These range from traditional tavern nights, to Greek trivi
a nights, to Greek food days where we give our peers just a small taste of some of our most well-known Greek delicacies (souvlakia, anyone?)
We are also affiliated and involved with NUGAS, the National Union of Greek Australian Students who also run a very broad range of events and participate in many community campaigns, events and incentives. LUGS, and our fellow university Greek Societies, play a vital role in the organization and promotion of these events. The Speak Greek in March campaign and the Greek Independence Day March are only two small examples of LUGS' involvement in the wider community. The annual NUGAS Ball is also one of the most highly-anticipated youth events of the year. While we are definitely about having fun and enjoying the entertaining and 'lighter-hearted' aspects of our culture, we definitely haven't dismissed the importance of involving ourselves and supporting our wider community to ensure that our traditions and Hellenism is kept alive for future generations. We want and need to give back to the people who have kept alive these traditions for us to enjoy - and continue to keep alive - so far away from Greece herself.
