🏆 Congratulations to the Winner of the 2026 Real Flame Local Legend Award, Maddie Francis!

Maddie Francis of Macleod founded NICU Cheer after her son was born 10 weeks prematurely, transforming her family’s experience into support for others. For almost a decade, she has coordinated volunteers, sourced donations and organised hospital deliveries, with gift bags reaching more than 1,260 families annually. Her network of over 750 volunteers creates handmade items and helps families facing neonatal intensive care feel less alone. Alongside full-time work and caring responsibilities, Maddie contributes to health advisory groups and helped develop Australia’s first national developmental follow-up guidelines for babies born very preterm, extending her impact from practical kindness to advocacy.

I’m so thrilled to share that I’ve been named a 2026 Victorian Semi Finalist in the 7NEWS Community Achievement Awards for my work with NICU Cheer. What an incredible honour. 🤍

To our global NICU Cheer community, this one is for all of you. 🌏

My son Ashton, born fighting at 10 weeks early, inspires me every single day to speak up for premature and medically complex children, children with high support needs, and the families navigating life alongside them.

What started with a tiny baby in a NICU has grown into a community that reaches far beyond anything I could have imagined. NICU Cheer exists because of the generosity, kindness and support of so many people, and I’m incredibly grateful to every volunteer, donor, hospital, supporter and family who has been part of our journey.

Thank you for cheering alongside us. 🎉👏🤍
