🌈 Celebrating Inclusive Change – New MSM Donor Policy in Australia! 🩸
This week marks a milestone for equality and inclusivity in blood and plasma donation across Australia. With the recent change in Lifeblood’s policy, more members of the LGBTQIA+ community are now eligible to donate.
On Tuesday (14/07), three of our medical students proudly became some of the first to donate plasma under the new guidelines at Lifeblood. Here's what they had to say:
As gay medical students, we’ve grown up under a system that saw who we loved as a barrier to how we could help.
For decades, men who have s*x with men (MSM) were excluded from donating blood in Australia—not based on individual risk, but on identity. Even in the face of modern testing, science, and evolving understanding of HIV transmission, our s*xuality continued to define our eligibility. This policy failed to keep up with medical evidence, and quietly reinforced shame and exclusion in clinical spaces.
But change is here. 💥
🏳️🌈 As of July 2025, Lifeblood will finally allow gay, bis*xual, trans women, and PrEP users to donate plasma without deferral.
And even bigger: by 2026, blood and platelet donation will move to gender-neutral, behavior-based screening. Risk will be assessed by recent s*xual behavior, not orientation.
This shift is not just a policy update. It's a signal that our blood is as worthy as anyone’s. Our contribution to community health is no longer conditional on denying who we are.
As future doctors—and as people who have lived the quiet ache of being turned away— we see this as a moment of progress, justice, and science finally walking hand in hand.
Let’s keep pushing for a healthcare system where evidence triumphs over prejudice.
We're proud of these students for leading by example and celebrating this important progress. If you're eligible, consider booking a donation — your contribution saves lives, and now more of us can be part of that.
