QUEENSLAND FARM Penalised for Exploiting PALM Scheme Workers and other visa holders

McCrystal Agricultural Pty Ltd, a potato farming business in the Lockyer Valley, has been ordered to pay $48,500 in penalties after the Federal Court found it unlawfully deducted money from the wages of PALM Scheme workers and other visa holders.

❌ The company took money for accommodation that did not meet legal minimum standards.
❌ Workers never gave proper written consent for these deductions.

Fair Work Ombudsman Anna Booth said: “Employers cannot make deductions from wages without workers’ proper written agreement, and deductions must be for their benefit.”

This penalty is a strong reminder that:
✅ PALM Scheme workers are entitled to the same workplace rights as any Australian worker.
✅ Employers who exploit migrant workers will face serious consequences.
✅ Both the Fair Work Ombudsman and the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) are actively working to protect the rights of PALM Scheme participants, ensuring that Australia’s labour mobility programs remain fair, lawful, and safe for everyone.

PALM Scheme workers contribute enormously to Australia’s farming industry. They deserve decent treatment, safe conditions, and respect for their hard work.

📍 Where: Cedric Davies Community Hub, 43 Anzac Avenue, Mareeba, QLD

Join us for an evening of connection and conversation in Mareeba and nearby areas — bringing together unions, community leaders, and supermarkets to talk about achieving fair wages and better working conditions for all farm workers.

All farm workers are welcome — including PALM workers, seasonal workers, visa holders, and backpackers living and working in Mareeba, Atherton, Dimbulah, Tolga, and surrounding regions.
