This week cadets reaquainted themselves with tying knots. Many of these are taught in the structural fire fighting course so prior knowledge will make it easier for them when the time to go on courses arrives. By showing the practical applications they can use their new knots at home.

Reef knot used to tie several ropes together. Cadet made a clothes line across the shed from scraps of rope...

Bowline creates a loop on the end of a rope. Cadets were able to secure a ladder for lifting, put a loop around a patient to lift them to a helicopter or simply drag them to safety.

Clove hitch fastens a line to a post that is secure. I grabbed the end of a rope and ran out the shed, cadets had to secure the rope to the light tanker before it ran out. They also saw how to use a clove hitch and a half hitch to safely lift an axe

At the end we were tasked with using our knots to safely suspend a patient in our basket stretcher from the roof of the station (nobody human or dummy were at risk I promise).

So our cadets came home from their annual winter overnighter today. What has been 1 night on my farm property in previous years has changed into 2 nights in tents at the Manjedal Activity Centre east of Byford. Somewhere ive been coming to since I was a cub scout a long time ago.
So tuesday morning 6 cadets in 2 cars with 2 trailers headed off. A lunch stop at Hungry Jacks before heading into the bush. When we arrived we made our beds in tents then donned out turn out gear and headed out on the blind trail. Blind folded, the cadets had to follow the rope thru the bush seeing only with their hands and feet like it was a smokefilled building.
Once everyone made it thru we went back to base camp and lit our cooking fire. Baked potatoes with chilli and coleslaw for dinner.
Wednesday cadets cooked bacon and eggs before a trip round the confidence course like a chain gang tethered together with rope. (That ought to promote team work)
When we stopped for lunch we were greeted by the maintenance man. We had previously requested an opportunity to volunteer some service onsite and he said there was a burn pile we could look after.
The cadets loaded the trailer with rakehoes, knapsacks and some welfare (toastys from the bbq) and we met up with maintenance man Callum and the MAC light tanker to spend the afternoon supervising a burn off. Thankfully the burn pile was right next to the frisbee golf course so we were able to get a round in before blacking out and heading back to base. Like good fire fighters we did a patrol of the fire before bed time.
The lads built a cooking fire and made chicken wraps and smores then played some UNO and bush blackjack before bed.
This morning we packed up our stuff and had pancakes on the bbq. Then we went for a hike to check that there was no signs of bird flu around the lake, that the burn pile was made safe and continued on round the park. A sausage sizzle before retiring the bbq back into the trailer and a sleepy (smelly for some) drive home.
I spoke to the staff before we left and gave them heaps of feedback about the place and they were really happy to receive it as well as grateful for the help we provided and welcomed any groups that would like to come up and use the facilities especially if they are willing to set aside some time to help work on some of the projects and activities around the site. In particular I flagged the mountain bike trail and the wet section of the confidence course.
I would thoroughly recommend this as a camp destination for any other cadet units especially if you mention when enquiring/booking that you wish to offer some MAC service in your schedule.
Hopefully our 6 campers are all showered and off to bed early tonight dreaming of next week returning to school. 🤣

Last night was an unusual session. (sorry no pictures) we spent some time doing camp prep for our 2 nighter coming up in the holidays.
Then I simulated a car crash and the cadets donned their High Vis and turned out in the 3.4. Crew leader Adrian assigned tasks to everyone and when they arrived the truck was parked in fend off position, traffic cones and E flares deployed. 2 traffic controllers set up, then crash site was lit up with work lights and first aider attended to the driver. Good for a first go well done Cadets.

Groundhog day again yesterday. Second time in a row we havent been able to burn some piles for the brigade due to high fire danger rating. All is not lost though. Some quick thinking from a cadet leader meant the cadets were still busy working together.
A 10 minute teach from our youngest had the cadets learning to make a cylinder paper plane.
Cash for cans were bagged ready for recycling.
Some large logs dropped at the Community Garden were rolled into position.
Then we finished up on our secret training ground. Here we were running hoses, using pump signals, puting out stags with the monitor, spotting the vehicles reversing around trees and we finished by shipping a hydrant to fill up and make fire ready again.
And that wasnt even the plan!
Theres always something to do.. well done guys for taking it all in your stride.
Hopefully next month we will get that fire going. 🔥

Well today marks an epic day of our cadets representing themselves and our Brigade.
Attended the dawn service in Bullsbrook, marching along side our brigade members.✅️

Preparing an elderly residents home for the brigade to hold a hazard reduction burn this afternoon. ✅️

Finally representing DFES at the Jambo Festival providing fun for kids and educating parents about fire safety and volunteering. ✅️

And we will be back at Jambo tomorrow. I am very proud of the 6 cadets that have stepped up and put their hand up this weekend. 🚒🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃

Yesterday this intrepid band of cadets made the trip to Lake Leschenaultia for a day of challenges and friendly competition. We started off with some mountain biking and some thoroughly sore legs and 2 flat tyres. Then some Orienteering around the lake.
After a hearty protein based bbq lunch we hit the beach.
Started out with rakehoe stretchers then into the water with some swimmer rescues. Once recovered the boys had some kayak races, battles, capsizing, slightly sinking.
We made a search area in the shallows and had cadets sweep the area for UneXploded Ordinance (UXOs) with there feet and goggles.
We finished off with an epic match of pushball. Think rugby with a giant yoga ball.
All including this cadet leader were thoroughly knackered and ready for bed by the end of the day but for anyone who hadnt had much of a school holiday excursion it was well worth it..

Last night we took a road trip 🚙🚗 to the beating heart of DFES, the command cente in Cockburn. A quick drive by McDermott Aviation to see the Helitaks sleeping then on to CommCen. The night shift welcomed us in and showed us the process of receieving a 000 call and then dispatching appliances to incident. It was very interesting and quite impressive to see.
