Dragon spotting at Valetta 🦎

Two great reptile photos from around the property.

The first one is an Eastern Bearded Dragon, which we’re pretty confident about. These guys are a pretty familiar sight out here and love sitting up high on a log or fence post watching the world go by (and waiting for the next insect to wander past).

The second one has us a little less sure. It really looks like a Jacky Dragon, but something about it just seems slightly different to us.

So we thought we’d throw it out there and see what people think.

One of the great things about living out here is you’re constantly noticing new bits of wildlife around the place. Even the fence posts and old logs seem to have something interesting sitting on them if you look closely enough.

One of the smaller residents of the wetlands — a Crucifix Frog.

These frogs spend most of their lives buried underground, only emerging after warm rain when temporary pools appear across the floodplain. When conditions are right, the wetlands suddenly come alive with their calls.

They’re easy to miss most of the year, which makes spotting one a good reminder of just how much life these wetlands quietly support.

Another bittern out at Valetta at sunset.

They’ve become a pretty regular sight along the shallow edges here this season — especially when the light drops and everything goes still.

This one worked the margin for a while before slipping back into the reeds like it was never there.

Still gets the heart rate up every time.
