Introducing Michelle

🔥 How long have you been a member?
I joined Hunter Valley Communications Brigade in December 2024.

🚒 Are you a dual member?
Absolutely! I've also been a member of Whittingham Rural Fire Brigade since December 2023.

📡 What do you love about being a Communications Operator?
I enjoy seeing how the Incident Management Team operates during incidents and have a real interest in bushfire behaviour and prediction. With a young family, being part of HV Comms is also a great way to stay involved with the RFS while balancing family life and commitments at Whittingham.

🙌 What advice would you give someone thinking about joining?
Just give it a go! You’re not locked in if it’s not for you, but I think you’ll probably find you really enjoy it. The HV Comms team are a lovely bunch of people and have been really welcoming.”

We love having passionate volunteers who want to learn, contribute and support our local brigades. Every member brings something unique to our team, and we’re excited to introduce more of our people over the coming weeks!

A Total Fire Ban will be in place tomorrow. Please take the time to prepare and stay informed.

📻 Hunter Valley Communications Brigade will be opening in support of the district, helping to ensure communications support is available.

⚠️ A few important reminders:

• Be vigilant and keep an eye on conditions around you.

• Follow all fire restrictions and stay up to date with official RFS advice.

• If you see smoke or fire, call Triple Zero (000) immediately. Do not assume someone else has reported it.

Let’s all do our part to keep our community safe. ❤️

A Total Fire Ban will be in place tomorrow, Monday 12 October 2026, for the Greater Sydney area with forecast Extreme fire danger and the Greater Hunter area with forecast High fire danger. Warm and windy conditions are forecast across parts of the state, increasing the fire danger.

Take action now. Know your fire risk and what you will do if fire threatens. Report all unattended fires to Triple Zero (000).

DID YOU CAMP THIS LONG WEEKEND?

Before you pack up and leave your campsite, make sure your campfire is completely out and cold.

- Use plenty of WATER to put your fire out.
- Don’t just bury it, hot coals can stay hidden underground and potentially reignite.

Pour water over the fire, stir the ashes and coals, then add more water until everything is cool to the touch.

Before you leave, take that extra few minutes to make sure your fire is well and truly out.

Put it out. Soak it. Stir it. Check it.

🔥🚒 EVER WONDERED WHAT THE DIFFERENCE IS BETWEEN A HAZARD REDUCTION AND A BACKBURN? 🚒🔥

Hazard reductions are planned well in advance. Firefighters take advantage of suitable weather conditions to safely reduce excess vegetation and fuel loads, helping prepare the landscape before the fire season.

Backburning is a defensive tactic used during an active bushfire. Under suitable conditions, firefighters may deliberately burn vegetation ahead of the main fire front to reduce available fuel and help slow or contain the fire.

Think of it this way:
🧹 Hazard Reduction is like cleaning your room before your parents tell you to.
🔥 Backburning is like frantically shoving everything under the bed after they’ve already walked through the door! 😂

Both involve fire, but the circumstances are very different.

🔥 Prepare early. Reduce the risk. Stay safe.

Congratulations to Renae, Owen & Michelle! 😊

2 days of learning and gaining a whole new insight into the world of communications was completed over the weekend at Lower Hunter Fire Control Centre.

Assessments are likely to be in February/March 2027, which will give these members plenty of time to build on what they have learnt and put experience into practice.

Our brigade continues to strengthen with a much greater understanding of communications needs, processes and opportunities ahead.

Can’t make it to Singleton, that’s okay our friends at NSW RFS- Kayuga Brigade are also open today for Get Ready weekend!

In addition to this Hunter Valley Communications will be turning out to keep an eye on our district as things heat up a little today!
