Maroochydore SES 2nd June 2026

A big Thankyou for a very informative presentation with excellent visuals from Qld Police Search and Rescue. It provided inside information on steps they go through to both initiate and request for SES assistance for a land search. Also, taking us through the criteria they require to complete and close off a search. A good night.

WOW Day is a day that recognised and said Thankyou to all our SES volunteers who do so much for their community. Whether it be in times of disaster or in normal times. Some of our members of Maroochydore SES were with the Major. The new City Hall Council building was lit up in orange to celebrate SES.

WOW DAY May 20, 2026

Wear Orange Wednesday with Maroochydore SES at Bunnings Maroochydore. This was a fabulous way to engage with our community and talk to them about storm damage readiness and sharing our SES storm preparation brochures plus, fridge magnets with key contact numbers when things go wrong.

We also enjoyed giving the kids stickers and activity books to share with their parents and grandparents. So they can spend quality time together having fun with learning about looking after your home and your family during storm time. Not to mention the kids loved the toy chainsaw and wearing the helmet which made them feel like a SES member helping the community.

Thankyou Bunnings Maroochydore for spoiling us with morning tea cookies and coffee/tea. It was very special and much appreciated.

Maroochydore SES May 2026 have been focusing on radios and communications. The importance of battery maintenance and log books so our GWN radios are ready to go for community call outs.

Familiarisation with all the functions, assembling and disassembling are needed especially if anything goes wrong in all types of weather conditions on a job.

An excellent exercise we deed was having 2 teams in different locations practise send/ receive techniques using phonetic alphabet and numbers as if communicating on an actual job and having a 3rd team completing a communication log sheet in a different location based on the other teams information over the radio. Then doing a debrief together on aspects of clarity, volume and what would be done differently next time.

Importance of service tags and being filled out correctly for faulty or broken radios was also addressed .

Maroochydore SES is confident and comfortable after these exercises when dealing with GWN radios on call outs in the community.

Tuesday 28th April Maroochydore SES carried out a full scale land search exercise drawing on all their experience over the last several weeks.

Norm, Maroochydore Group Leader briefed the SES members on locating missing person in dense bush using line formation, working with RPAS and radios.

Line formation effectively covered large distance while maintaining high visibility of the ground in the dark with members aligned side by side in straight line arms length apart.

On locating missing person first aider administered treatment and group leader organised team to retrieve patient by using practical knot skills and securing casualty to stretcher.

And then came the twist….
The missing person/casualty advised that he had been attacked, so now we have a new Situation and new Mission. This was now a crime scene!
Whilst Team Alpha secured the area, new established Team Bravo retrieved the casualty.
Once the casualty had been removed, Team Apha reset the search pattern proceeding with a Forensic search, locating the weapon used in the attack.

After team navigated dense bush land terrain in heavy vegetation and safely returned casualty to base a thorough debrief concluded the exercise.

Congratulations to all Maroochydore SES participants in this invaluable exercise
