Australian Water Partnership

Australian Water Partnership Water security in Asia and the Pacific is under threat.

The Australian Water Partnership is an Australian international cooperation initiative helping developing countries in the Indo-Pacific region, and beyond, work towards the sustainable management of their water resources. Improving agricultural water productivity, achieving energy needs, maintaining the resilience of cities in the face of rapid urbanisation and climate change, satisfying growing i

ndustrial water requirements, and protecting water quality and natural ecosystems all continue to pose deep challenges for development. The social, economic and political consequences of water shortages are real, as are the effects and impacts of worsening climate-related water extremes. The Australian Water Partnership (AWP) offers a unique opportunity to bring together the Australian development and water sectors under a long-term strategic engagement framework. By sharing its experiences from three decades of water reform, and from learning to manage water as a scarce economic good, Australia can help international partners to develop a better understanding of their sustainable water resource base, implement robust basin-scale planning, enact governance reforms supported by innovative policy and legal frameworks, strengthen institutions and build professional capability, develop water sensitive cities, improve water quality and ecological health, and manage demand and improve water use efficiency, in a variable and drying climate.

Bringing a perspective to considerations of competing demands on rivers and waterways, Coral Pasisi from Pacific-Community-SPC highlighted the vulnerability of the Pacific region to disasters. Coral also discussed the challenges on achieving and maintaining an adequate supply of freshwater to communities who, in some cases, actually don’t have surface fresh water sources.

The Pacific region is working together to raise a collective voice and elevate water to the forefront of more climate conversations... must be a priority moving forward.

You can hear directly from Coral via the Pavilion recorded presentation at https://www.youtube.com/live/ngdxeRquAec?si=ZoWlNrMZZ8HPje4i&t=579

Pacific island populations may be small in number, but the problems facing the communities are immense in scale—high amongst them access to safe and secure drinking water. Mr Amit Singh, NDC Hub Manager at the PPacific-Community-SPC joined a select group of panelists in the Ukraine Pavilion at COP30 to discuss “Resilience By Design”, talking the importance of financing robust and continuing water infrastructure for Pacific nations.

Moderated by the South Australian Water Ambassador Karlene Maywald, the session explored protecting water access and rebuilding new infrastructure in the face of challenges such as , , and spread; guests shared their points of view from and contexts.

When a recording of this event becomes available we will do our utmost to share so that you, too, can hear more from these esteemed guests.

Putting water at the heart of EVERY climate conversation is an imperative more of us should follow.

Excellent to see from the outset of in that voices from the region and Pacific-Community-SPC are being raised, elevating water into more climate discussions. Also terrific that more emphasis is being placed on the central role Indigenous knowledge can play informing approaches to the and adaptability of our , now and into whatever future we shape as a global community.

Elevating water in climate discussions and improving the ways water is managed are an increasingly high priority for Pacific nations.

Right now AWP is present with several other groups in Honiara, partnering together to pursue potential improvements to the Solomon Islands Water Authority Act (SIWA Act) and Catchment regulations.

It is important to identify what is working well, as well as guide the development of updated, climate-resilient water management frameworks that integrate customary law and GEDSI principles.
This is a combined effort between several partners including Restore Blue, Johnson Legal,
Solomon Islands Environmental Law Association (SIELA),
UTS Institute For Sustainable Futures, and
Flinders University.
.. all working with Solomon Islands Water Authority (SIWA) and the Water Resources Division of the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification (MMERE).

With essential services such as water, the intersecting elements of legislation in countries such as the Solomon Islands and the importance of partnerships and understanding ensure the best possible delivery in meeting community needs.
