A $12 million solar power and battery storage system has been approved for Djarindjin on the Dampier Peninsula, by the Regional Development Assessment Panel this week.

A total of 3,408 solar panels, set in the shape of a turtle, and a 3.25 megawatt battery storage system will connect to the Djarindjin Lombadina microgrid.

Called Aalga Goolil, sun turtle, will be WA’s first 100 per cent Indigenous-owned solar battery power station.

The seven-hectare solar farm should meet 80 per cent of the communities’ needs, while a back-up diesel generation facility will be upgraded and operated by Horizon Power to provide the other 20 per cent.

PILBARA ELDER REFLECTS ON STATION LIFE AND THE LEGACY OF THE 1946 STRIKE

BY KALMIA SAMBO

Pilbara elder Marshall Smith says the stories of the past are still shaping the present.

Born on Banjima Country around Mount Bruce, Mr Smith grew up working on stations, learning the land and building lifelong connections.

β€œWe were 12, 13-year-old young stockmen… wearing the hat, the boots, the lot,” he said.

It was during those early years he met Mr Mowarin β€” a friend and relative he would go on to work alongside for decades.

β€œWe became not only good friends… we were family too.”

MINGULLATHARNDO HISTORY TRIBUTE PARK OPENING

5 Mile holds deep history for the region. It is Ngarluma Country and has played many roles over time β€” from the days of Mount Welcome Station, to a police paddock, to a place connected to the 1946 Pilbara Strike.

This year marks 80 years since the 1946 Strike, and the site includes stories of the 46 strikers, with some having lived and mined in this area.

On the day, you can:

Learn about the 1946 Pilbara Strike
Visit the old vehicles used by the strikers
See the historic grader and tractor from the Shire of Roebourne
Hear more about the Mingullatharndo Community and its history

A light lunch will be provided after the opening.

Shade, chairs and cold water will be available β€” but it’s a good idea to bring your own water and fly nets.

Everyone is welcome. Come down, have a look, and spend some time on Country.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

Darkside is a Bidyadanga born hard rock band made up of Karajarri musicians, formed in 2023, blending powerful rock covers with their own original sound.

Darkside features a wicked line up of musicians with John Bennett on drums, Kelvin Mitchelson playing bass, Thomas Gray as lead guitarist, Patrick Ishiguchi as rhythm guitarist and Leanna Shoveller on lead vocals! πŸ™ŒπŸ½

The name Darkside has a great story behind it. Just 20 minutes before their first major performance in 2023, their bass player turned towards the band and suggested the name, they instantly agreed. Their logo was designed by the lead singer’s young daughter, 'Reilyn', a design the band proudly wears as part of their identity.❀️

On their journey forward, Darkside stepped into their next chapter, bringing original rock songs to the stage and winning Battle of the Bands Broome 2025!

Built on heavy guitars, fast beats and a shared love of rock, they will continuing to leave their mark anywhere and everywhere they perform.🎸
